Icon3 SOHC Engine Info.

This is my engine in my EF Hatch. Not sure what block, head, and valve cover I have on this thing. It was swapped before I got the car and unfortunately there was no paperwork with the swap .. :thumb down: Just wondering if you guys could give me a little more info on my engine.

When I took off the valve cover there was a broken head on one of the bolts holding the rocker assembly down ( arrow pointing to it in pic.) Everything is still held in fine. But not sure how to remove this when I need to.

Wanting to do some simple upgrades but am wanting some info before I do anything.

Thanks.

Generally speaking your ZC is equivalent to a USDM D16A6. That DPFI intake manifold is really hold you back FYI (probably that exhaust manifold too). About that bolt, use a bolt extractor or remove the entire cradle/rocker arm assembly and then you might have enough room to use vise grips to remove it. Keep in mind there is a specific sequence to removing and installing the assembly.

That is a solid little engine. In no order, this is what I would do:

1. Fix the bolt, it will probably cause issues eventually. 24TEN outlined the basics for you.
2. Replace the intake with a MPFI intake. Pretty simple mod, will require some wiring alterations, a new ECU, and a new distributor. All of which can be gotten off of the D16A6 I believe. And I think those pieces can be had cheap since people often use the D16A6 for a mini-me/Z6 head swap.
3. Replace the exhaust with a $50 eBay exhaust. I know I went cheap here, but it will be heaps better than that exhaust and it's cheap.
4. Replace the value cover gasket
5. General tune up
6. Clean the motor with simple green.

If just the head of the bolt broke off, then you can remove the rocker assembly and grab the remainder of the bolt with some vice grips.

Regardless of the way that you get the bolt out, chase the threads with a tap to clean out any damage. It's not usual to break off the head of a bolt unless it was overtightened.

Thank you for all the info everyone! I want to change over to MPFI but don't you have to get the pm6 ecu which is 5 speed? I only have a 4 speed tranny would this cause a problem or would I need to do a 5 speed swap before the MPFI?

Also if I was to find another D16A6 engine what all would I need to complete this mod?

Is this a good tutorial on how to do it? and are the materials correct?

Okay, MPFI is a great mod. You will need a new ECU. The PM6 is from the D16A6, right? It will work. You need it to be a manual transmission ECU, don't worry about how many gears. It will work with your 4 speed transmission. With that said, I would convert to a 5-speed transmission since it will also improve performance.

From the D16A6 motor, you will need:

ECU
Distributor
Intake Manifold (MPFI)
Injectors (Should be in manifold)
Injector plugs (possibly injector resister box if needed)

Lastly, Yes. That is a good write up. One of the many I used when converting to MPFI myself.
