Default H22 EG build thread

Hey guys, been lurking on honda-tech for years now and I've decided to to my first official build thread.

So my journey began about a year ago when I had a sweet deal thrown at me. 91 Civic Si with a h22a4 for $500. Knowing the previous owner hacked everything and took every possible shortcut, I jumped on the deal and began making preparations to bring the h22 back to life. I was originally going to keep the h22 in the EF chassis, but to make a long story short it wasn't worth it. So I decided on an EG chassis as my canvas. As of now, Im just getting everything on the engine back up to spec.

This is the hatch the day I bought her:

Cleaning some parts up:

Dirty throttle body:

Clean throttle body and new tps:

Cleaning head and block:

Almost done:

Some goodies:

Finished Valve Cover

Not finished yet, still waiting on injector seals from honda and fuel rail spacers

Mounts:

More goodies:

Just ordered: 93 Accord shift assembly
Ordered from honda: ECT and IAT

Question for you guys, I wanna remove the IACV and FITV all together for a clean look. I live in FL so cold weather is not a problem. Other than that are there any other things that could mess with my idle?

Not too much progress today. Did a little more cleaning of the transmission and mock up to see how things will look. I did manage to prep the removal of the h22 for tomorrow.

Thanks! I've been using a wire wheel on drill for the easy areas. And using a wire brush for hard to reach spots. I then follow up with a brass brush afterwards.

Update! Shift assembly came in

I managed to get the h22 out. Sorry no pictures of the process I forgot my SD card at work. On the plus side of things my IAT, ECT, all the injector o-rings and misc bolts/screws came in from Honda. All that's left is the axles/halfshaft and a chassis! Stay tuned!

Nice. In for results. Did you spray paint the parts after cleaning?

Thanks man and no paint. Don't really like the idea of painting engine parts. Although the thought has crossed my mind but I tend to keep engines clean. I might do the manifold in black. Still don't know on that.

like how clean that engine is looking, nice job. I wouldn't personally paint the manifold, I would get it ceramic coated has a good finish (if you get a colour coat) and it helps with performance.

Update! At the beginning of this thread I didn't state why I decided to abandon the chassis. So I figured pictures could speak loud than word. Read for the ?

Here is the wrong way to 1. Weld a mount in a mount and 2. Hack you frame to bits to fit the h22.

To top it off I realized the slave cylinder needs replacing.

Ready for another one?

Ouchies!

Shift assembly split?!

This one tho is by far my favorite.

Now that's what I call custom.

So now you should understand why I bought it for $500 and why I'm putting the h22 in another chassis. Okay so that was the bad. Here's the good

I managed to save the GSR seats that came with the car. I totally thought they weren't worth a crap.

Just a few things missing on the seats, cleaned up pretty nice tho.

NRG steering wheel.

I plan on polishing it and hopefully finding a place that cleans suede! Any recommendations?

Briannnn!!!!!!! You didn't tell me that you were making a build thread. Who's hatch did you buy?

Btw, you should track down your old EF and drop the swap on that. I loved that Hatchie.

I figured you would stumble on this and realize it was me! And yea the red 91 Si would have been perfect!! And I'm actually going EG or possibly DC. When I get some cashed saved I'll be deciding then. Which is also why I haven't ordered axles. I have plenty to work with for now. BTW how the hell did you know it was me?

Update! Injector O-rings, ECT, IAT and misc screws. I forgot the insulators for the injectors. It's all good though I still need to order some oil pump seals, throw out bearing, transmission bolts, oil cooler seal, water pump and reverse switch.

Once I get the insulators, Ill be getting the manifold cleaned a final time before reassembly. Also I'm thinking about getting a FITV and IAC block off kit. <- Anyone care to chime in on this? Also after reading a bit, I might be getting some ARP intake manifold bolts (longer) as I have read there's not much of the threads to grab when using a Hondata IM gasket.

Update!

Found a set of timing covers

AC bracket ordered

So my goal for this is simple, I want that super OEM look. Hopefully the end result will be a Civic that looks like it should have came with a h22. I have already organized all the parts I need. I plan on taking my time and doing right the first time. Stay tuned, lots more to come. As always Im open to suggest and feedback!

So I managed to get the h22 completely out of the EF. I had to get a little creative to get the engine out.

So this what I did, and this is a personal first for me. Not to mention I have to no one around to lend a hand. (Don't pay attention to the crap *** header, Im going with an oem one with heatshield )

Sorry no pictures of the engine on the hoist, but you can imagine how it looks. With that being said I have gained back some much needed space in the garage. Later this week I'm getting the car hauled off for the arrival on the next canvas. <- Still undecided on what to get.

Seems like there's no end to the neglect this engine has endured. Looks like I'll need to take the pump off or possible buy a new one. <- not really I enjoy this

This is why I purchased another set of timing covers. I also order all the hardware/gasket associated with the covers. (Yes, I know. I'll be buying another crank pulley lol)

Back shot of the block

Hey what do we have here?! smh

I have a few things I'm waiting for from Honda. I have yet to talk about the goal of this build so I'm deciding now would be a good time. For starters I don't plan on building this bottom end. I do plan on sourcing a complete h22a1 long block ( closed deck ) and building that slowly. With that being said my ideal chassis would be 92-95 Civic hatch with a h22 A/C and P/S super oem style goodness. And I really do mean OEM style. Hopefully in the near future I'll be doing a NSX brake upgrade along with a rear disc conversion. Stay tuned! As alway feedback is appreciated!

Possibly found the chassis I've been looking for. And it fit the bill perfect. 1994 Civic Ex Sedan! The H22 will be a PnP in affair. 4 doors for the family, 4 wheel disc brakes and a sunroof!

Update! I didn't get the chassis I wanted so I'm still looking! On a side note I ordered a Kaizenspeed tensioner, timing belt, OEM water pump and oil pump seals. Once I get these parts in, the timing side of the engine is done minus the timing covers. I managed to get the new camshaft seals and cam seal installed. I post some pictures later tonight.
