Default dohc losing to a sohc???

Let me know what you guys think is going on here. I've got a crx with a stock b16 swap with bolt ons and vafc setting the vtec at 4400 and shifting at 8k with an LS tranny. I went to the races, ran a stock looking EG and a riced out 99coupe EX. I thought they were both single cams. My car is gutted and the vtec is at 4400, I can barely pull on the EG and finally lose by half a car and lose to the coupe by half a car. EG says he's got a b16 and the coupe says it's a SOHC, BS on the sohc, but he didn't run again. If i would have set my vtec a little lower, would that have made any difference? Even though the swap was cheap, I'd figured I'd have the weight advantage! wat do you guys think!

It is possible for a SOHC motor to beat the almighty DOHC motor, you know that right?

Yeah, get it tuned, set VTEC at 5000 rpm or so, and get an S1 tranny. This will all make a BIG difference!

i know it's possible, i just couldn't believe it because both cars where heavier and the EG was packing some big subs in the back. Just takes a while for reality to kick. And I initially had the vtec at 5400 with the vafc and it felt like it was pulling harder, louder and felt the butt dyno, but i thought it was psychological. why does setting the vtec too low make it bad for the performance?

amen, i beat most b16 swapped civics here in tucson with my stock d15b2 with bolt ons. then theres some b16s that wax the floor with me. it depends on how strong the motor is. just cause you have a b series, doesnt make you faster than a d series. theres a few non-vtec SOHCs in socal running mid to high 13s.

Because VTEC is may to make high end power. That's why a VTEC cams has 2 sets of lobes, the smaller ones for low end, and the bigger ones for high end.

setting it at 4400 RPM's is where the ECU thinks it is at WOT at only 4400. I've got my switchover at the factory spec. (5k)

i would deffinately get an s1 trans for your self possibly a good clutch/ flywheels setup while your taking it off...and put that vtec up in the 5000-5100 range.

Don't worry man I've lost to a couple sohc at the track. However they were turbo so I kinda expected to lose since I only run mid to high 14's consistently. Ditch the LS trans and up the VTEC point and you will see a difference. 5000-5300 would be a good range for the VTEC engagement point.

Yeah, get it tuned, set VTEC at 5000 rpm or so, and get an S1 tranny. This will all make a BIG difference!
damn beat me to it.
that is prolly the worst tranny u can have mated to your b16 for track purposes.
i think the the d16z/y trannys are closer geared and that is prolly why u lost.
What was your 1/4 mile time i would assume with that tranny u are running in the mid to high 15's.
An s1 will at least cut a second off of that.
I have my vtec set at 4k and dont really see any problems, never had it set higher so I dont know if it would be beneficial. My motor pulls hard after 4k but there is not a huge difference in power between 3500 and 4500.

Heres an example of vtec set too low. I think this one was set at 4700. Major dip in power. Set it back to 5200 with stock cams. Clean your air filter then go back and wax that ***.

a VTEC tranny? what is a VTEC tranny? there is no such thing...

anywayz. i like my b series.. some people expect them to be fast stock... well, they are wrong. a lot of people expect too much from a b16a, and think they are ****.. well, they are wrong. i accept my car for what it is now, and will be doing performance mods soon. but y'know what? i'm happy with a stock b series..
