Default Help with installing trunk latch

ok so I replaced my trunk latch on a 98 civic coupe because it wouldn't stay closed but I can't get the rod that connect from the key tumbler to the latch back in I tried connecting it to the latch than tried sliding it in but it didn't work because of the way it's shaped. Any one know of an easy way? It seems like the rod tip is too short on the latch end because the tip is longer on the tumbler end and easy to snap in help please

Maybe post pics, cause I don't really know what you're talking about.
