225/45 is a perfect size for 8" wide wheels.
If you go on tire rack, they give you recommended rim widths for each tire. For reference, 8.8" is 225mm. But each tire has varying widths. 225mm tires range in actual size. Some are wider than others. For example, some bridgestone "225's" sit closer to 245mm wide.
I had 225/45 hankook rs3's on 15 x 6.5 wheels. It was a little tight, but it worked. 7.5-8" is the recommended width for most 225/45 tires.

On my STi i run 225/45-17 Dunlop WinterMaxx on Evo 8 Enkeis 17x8 and Dunlop Direzzas in 245/45-17 on OEM BBS 17x8. I'm pretty sure these will fit with room to spare.
