Icon3 Need some advice on rebuilding block?

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum although I have searched a few things on here before.

I have 1991 Integra. Stock b18a1. 154,xxx original miles! 5 speed.

Long story short. Bought this car. Very mint and didn't care that the car did need engine work. Previous owner was honest and said head was rebuilt hoping it would fix the smoking but was told cylinder 1 piston rings were shot.

Anyway, car will smoke on idle and will continue to do so while driving (I'm pretty sure). I did a compression test, results were cylinder 1 60, cylinders 2 and 3 90 and cylinder 4 120. Yes, I know, terrible haha. Car runs, but will run like crap till like 3k rpms and then run normal, by then I have already shifted. Most of the time, runs like crap. Spark plug on cylinder 1 looks super foul (black) and even has no electrode? The little pointy part, whatever it is called. I can take pics if necessary.

I spoke to a friend of mine, he says it sounds like piston rings. My question is, which brand? Also for crankshaft and rod bearings. Good idea to changed these correct? This car will not be beat, it isn't to race, however, I MAY swap in a VTEC head in the near future. But more than likely I will be swapping a b20vtec much later. The head was rebuilt completely as in 3 angle valve job, new valve stems and all that jazz.

Any advice or suggestions is appreciated. Sorry for the long thread. Just trying to give everyone all info that may be needed.

Also, I have some minty PR3 b16 pistons I am looking to put in here. In addition, looked into King bearings and NPR piston rings? Have heard both good and bad, mainly good, what do you guys suggest?

Thanks!

The money you will spend on a good rebuild might as well go to the b20

If you re use the bearings. Which you should get new ones,
Re measure them and keep track of where everything goes.
But if the b20 isn't till like 2 yrs. then just get new rings and bearings and get the block honed and decked.
And get the head checked out even tho all this said work is done to it

I be used npr rings in two of my set up and never gave me problems, just make sure u measure the rings properly and shave them down if need to b.

Bearings I've used kings bearings, acl bearings, and oem bearings. I like the acl and oem better, again no matter what bearings u use, just measure them for proper clearance and lube them.

If ur taking the motor apart just throw those pr3 pistons on those ls rods. But then again ur not goin for racing and plus you'll have to spend money to tune.

Thanks for the input. I'm actually getting the rebuild kit for $80 and I'm bring charged $150 to rebuild the block. I don't think it's too bad. Is a tune a must for the b16 pistons?

If would were u I would tune. The ls ecu won't mix the air /fuel right for the added compression of the pr3s. According the compression calculator if u added the pr3 pistons, ur compression will b at 11.27.1cp.

Nice. Yeah I'll definitely ask my buddy to tune it for me. So would you say it's worth it? $80 for parts and $150 for labor?

Not sure bout na ls motors, I've built plenty of gsr and ls turbos. I'm a vtec maniac. But seems to me the high compression ls motor will b a good match against a Jdm gsr. Mayb somebody with experience that done all motor ls will give u more info.

Probably b best to swap out ur tranny to b16, gsr, or type r tranny. Ls tranny has long gear which is great for boost setup, but ls tranny for na setup sux. That's my opinion

230$ for an engine rebuild sure ! perfect set up for an LSV just use arp rod bolts so you can spin to at least 8K.

Alright sounds good! I'm looking into the ARP bolts now. I have a feeling the transmission it currently has is GSR. I have driven GSR, LS and B16. Night and day differences for sure!
