Default 2 1/4" vs 3" exhaust for low boost

i found an awsome deal on a full stainless 2 1/4" magnaflow catback for $300 shipped and dont knock magnaflow because they make quality products, thermal even uses their mufflers and resonators for their exhausts. but anyways i am starting to consider going turbo on my d16z6, if i did i would only run 5-7 psi. how big of a difference would 3" be compared to the 2 1/4" at low boost and would it be worth passing up this deal and saving up for 3", remember i am on a budget. thanks for readin this

go with the magnaflow then. 3" does make a difference but at 5-7psi it wont be that big of a deal.

I agree. With the horse power you will be putting out 2 1/4 should be about right. You figure cars that put out around 200 horses have 2 1/4" exhuast systems. I'm going be running 2 1/4" at around 5 to 7psi also, let me know how it goes with yours. You could always upgrade later, although it will mean an increase in noise.

thats kinda what i figured that for the amount of boost i'm planning on running the 2 1/4" would be fine. of course the 3" would be better for any turbo setup but considering my situation i think i'm just gonna go with the 2 1/4". thanks for the input

was it a straight through muffler or was it chamberd? 300 isn't to bad but I'm gonna build mine, it'll be cheaper than that. I've been contemplating 2.75...not sure

first of all, you wont run just 5-7psi. you will turn up the boost. thats like saying yer only gonna knock up natalie portman once when you hit it all week.

secondly, its 2.25 right? has a resonator right? the sound is going to be different and quieter because of the turbo.

do the turbo right and you wont regret it.

just so you know.. everyone says they are gonna go turbo... buy the turbo before the exhaust... cuz i said so.

You figure cars that put out around 200 horses have 2 1/4" exhuast systems.
They would use bigger exhausts if they could....the more flow the better. The reason they need the smaller exhaust is for the correct amount of back-pressure to make the horsepower. You dont have to worry about that on a turbo'd car because the turbo provides back-pressure. I say got 3"...you wont regret it. That way if you want to turn up the boost on occasion to race a domestic(or to let a biyatch feel the mad pizower) you will know that you have enought flow for it. Besides the louder your exhaust the more stealthy it is...sounds stupid but if they only hear a loud *** exhaust and not a turbo or BOV then they will wanna piece....if they hear you blowing off then theyll go the other way. Go 3"...

I think you will be very happy with the results of switching to a 3 inch.

Well actually no....hehe, its more of a trade off, I hate loud exhausts more than anything, thats why i didnt switch it out, now that im planning on a better set up....ill get the 3" when im looking to run a lot of boost.

i saw a test on turbo mag that went from 2.25" to 3" and they gained 3 hp, but that was at 7psi. they stated the gain would have been bigger w/ high boost.

What is a quiet 3'' exhaust? With size incress i am allso guessing that you get in increase in DB levels.

I want to keep the noise tolerable.

basically the only option would be custom w/ a really large resonator (3" magnaflow resonator thats like 18"+ long)

that or the thermal exhaust w/ stealth option although i've never heard it personally

i'm thinkin i might just go with the magnaflow though cause i'm not even %100 sure if i'm gonna turbo my car cause i have high miles on it and i cant afford a second car if somthin goes wrong. I think i am gonna focus more on suspension for now and wait to build a motor till i get a swap later down the road. thanks for the replys though

I'm running that exact setup under my CRX. Actaully it's deep and throaty. Not annoying and buuzy like N/A honda straight exhausts are. Only time it really gets loudit when you step into it and the RPM's start to climb and the turbo start to spool up.

@ 10 PSI noticed a big top-end difference when I switch from a crushed bent 2.25" custom flowmaster exhaust, to a custom3" straight exhaust.
