1996 LX stumped
I have a 1996 Accord LX 2.2L 4cyl non-vtech. Let me start by saying I am not a mechanic nor can I afford one. However, I am not an idiot either. The car started with a no spark issue and I got that taken care of after replacing many parts but now that I have him started he makes a rather loud screeching whining type of noise and the idle is crazy high. Oh and let me not forget the smoking. I am completely stumped and I can't handle the stress of not having a car being as I just found out the good Lord has decided to bless me with the opportunity of motherhood. I do have a friend that will take whatever direction I can give him the problem is I have no where to direct him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and did I mention the alternator pulley is getting awfully hot but I had the alternator checked and it is good and have tried loosening and tightening the belt to it as well and neither have helped.
For the high idle sounds like you might have a vacuum leak. Could be a loose/cracked hose or maybe a gasket between the throttle body and intake manifold. You should have your friend check for vacuum leaks.
There are a few other things that can cause a high idle, throttle body idle air screw out of adjustment. A dirty throttle body, fast idle thermal valve out of adjustment, an air bubble in the coolant system or faulty engine coolant temp sensor. Those are some areas to test, do not just start replacing them. There are procedures you can have done to test these things first.
As far as the high screech is concerned. That could be a bearing or belt. If you pop the hood while the engine is running and lightly spray WD-40 near the area the sound is coming from that will at least get you in the right direction.
Most times it is a loose or old worn out belt that causes that noise. If you spray the belt and the noise stops it's more than likely time for a new belt. Be it the alternator or power steering belt. that you will have to find out!
