I'd guess it's going to put more wear on the tranny internals. I know with my 5 speed I'd rather use the brakes then downshift, much cheaper to replace brakes than a clutch, or in your case, a tranny rebuild.

yes, but if you're a good shifter then you don't have to worry about downshifting and ruining the clutch. j/k

I agree though about an automatic transmission. Probably shouldn't do it.

Well you should just use your brakes but I used to do that occasionaly in mine and the tranny lastest just fine up until 150,000 miles when I swapped it for the 5-Speed.

I wouldn't shift that thing any more than you have to.

Why would you want to do this? Brakes were designed to slow you down, not your transmission. Or you just wanna repreZent wiT y0 maDD automatic shifting skillZ?

haha... but seriously even if you can match perfect there will still be a bit of friction created, and I still say the cooler you can keep an auto tranny the longer it would last, and downshifting like that is going to build up heat, and thefore put more strain on the auto tranny than necessary. Just my .02.

I think we're agreeing with each other, excpet a tad bit confused. On an auto-tranny, I would never downshift from D4-D3 etc. On a manual though, it's a different story.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I got a 95 automatic, with 360,000 miles on it and I always upshift and downshift manually, and the tranny is still the original. Of course, when downshifting, a little tad on the gas will not hurt, if anything it might help, because this way you're saving the friction to bring the rev up, but still it isn't bad enough that you would have to worry about it. I never lasted a manual tranny as long. (But that don't mean I prefer automatic...)

down shift to slow down your vehicle is going to wear your transmission internals faster. usually it's done in racing. i guess they want to avoid over braking and loose gripping.
if you change your tranmission fluid regularly i don't think you should worry about it. (i know some folks in HS change every 5000; that's not my way)
and of course keep in mind that you are at the right speed (don't want to down shift and over rev your car)
high mileage car will eventually break down. not just tranny, i mean everything. that's what call life cycle. LOL

I don't think that will help. Your rpm will get high in 3rd gear and the mp sitll the same at 4th gear. You need to release the gas put in Neutral then press the brake. Before you press the gas back, put in D4 and wait ultill you feel the gear change then press on the gas. Why? example: when you stop at a red light if you release the brake your will keep moving, if you put in Neutral your will not moving. So when it not moving press the brake it will help.

Listen ppl: downshift for automatic just stupid...yes, stupid
It won't help...what the hell you guy think it will do?
Yes, downshift build up more heat and it will wear out the tranny faster.
I guess the only reason i will "downshift" an auto tranny is when i have enuff moola to do a swap.
