D16Y7 Weird Noises - Urgently Need Help!

Icon3 D16Y7 Weird Noises - Urgently Need Help!

D16Y7, 118k miles, idk what this sound is. Here's a video:


Some info:

1. Filled it up with oil 2 days ago, it took a whole quart to get to half-way on the crosshatches on the dip stick. (I know that's a terrible amount of oil to be missing but I had a slow leak that got worse )

2. Feels very sluggish, like I'm hauling cows in the back seat.

3. The sound gets louder and faster at higher RPM.

4. The oil pressure light on the instrument cluster flickers sometimes and my idle drops to ~500 RPM.

5. Car has been stalling at idle the past couple days and the idle screw is tight and has never been touched.

6. Light grey smoke from exhaust. Smells like burning plastic. No gas smell.

So... I'm 99% sure something if royally f***ked and I'm gonna need a new engine but I want to know what it is exactly.

The oil pressure light is a dummy light. If it's on, you have NO oil pressure. If it's coming on at low RPM, either your oil is severely low, your oil pump is fucked, or your oil journals are clogged. It's time for a rebuild.

It started doing this just before I topped it off. It took a whole quart to get it just right, so it's probably the pump or clogged journals, isn't it.

Also, what is the knocking sound coming from? Rod?

That sounds more like valve tap to me, but I'm on a work computer with some shitty 1" speaker in the back of it, so I can't really tell. It could be a spun bearing from oil starvation, or it could just be valve tap. If you're losing that much oil, it sounds like you have a leak in combination with a possibly failing oil pump. Does your exhaust have a blue'ish tint to it? Are you leaking any oil? It has to be going somewhere.

I have an oil pan gasket leak as well, it's the reason it was ever low at all. And yeah, the exhaust smoke had a very light blue tinge to it.

I'll post another, better video tomorrow and rev it a little higher so that it will be a lot more clear. It's not the ticking you hear the whole time. It's only the knocking you hear before the end.

Get valve adjustment. See if that fixed anything. if your oil light flickers then your oil pump is failing, or it did. My oil light flickered when i did a oil change, and the rubber seal wasnt in right and, it leaked my oil..dam fram

Before I would consider my motor bad in this situation is definitely look into clogged or semi clogged oil journals. I would drain about a quart of your oil out (considering its full) and replace it with a quart of quality ATF (I recommend Max Life ATF.) run that fluid mixture at idle revving up to 3000 and holding for 5-10seconds intermittently until operating temp. See if that clears up any ticking or knocking. ATF is a powerful cleaning agent, but May make preexisting leaks get worse if your motor is dirty inside (sludge or buildup from improper maintenance.) Make sure that if you do this you don't leave the ATF in for very long. Drain and fill engine oil and replace OF right after this test. <my choice of engine flush)
