Default Opinions on Wireless S300 Idea

Just for a project on the side, I was thinking of using a bluetooth USB adapter and an Arduino board, just for a prototype, to possibly make tuning wireless? Hondata probably won't let me have their code for their software to manipulate it, and I don't have the programming skills to reprogram the software to use the standard bluetooth in a computer, so I think the best option would be to build a bluetooth module and program it as a convertor. From there I would make it smaller and more compact so it can be put on any S300 by tracing and printing a new board.

Is there a specific reason Hondata is not incorporating wireless into their board? Does anyone have any other opinions on a better setup? I was thinking Wifi, but that would be a bit more complicated.

Are there any other EE's on here that might have any better ideas?

The Moates Demon works with a wireless Bluetooth module. I had limited success using it. You could make calibration updates but it was slow and unreliable to datalog with. However it was independent of the Demon board. Another words you plug it into the USB header and BT to your laptop therefore I suspect it would work with the S300.

Fortunately the Moates Demon came with a 4pin header the BT module would easily plug into vs the USB Type B header on the S300 board. However if you are comfortable with PCB soldering you can easily replace the header.

This is the BT module I am talking about. https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10268

How slow was it? That's awesome how there's already one out there. The USB ports are just 4 pins, power, ground, and two data, which I assume would be the same type of pins for the 4 pin setup? Ya I do a lot of board soldering, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Does this Bluetooth module transmit data after the datalogging is stored, or does it transmit data as it receives it? What if I made something that transmitted the data as it is collected?

I had to turn down the datalogging speed in Neptune for the connection to be reliable. I can't quantify the speed for you. When I forced it to run at the fastest speed it would drop the connection to the Demon. It wasn't ideal for realtime datalogging but rather calibration updates or downloading the onboard datalogs.

The BT module transmits the connection between laptop and Demon exactly the same way the USB cable would. It does transmit the data as its being collected in real time.

Again, I dont know if this method would work with S300 but I dont see why not as its independent of the tuning hardware. Its more like a USB dongle. The only downside with the S300 is that you have to modify the USB header to test it.

Ok thanks. I'm sure it'll work since you're just changing the way the data is transmitted. Maybe I'll try to build my own so I can try to help with the lack of speed in real time datalogging.

From what I have collected so far the best speeds for the ECUs run at 38400 (something) bps. I would recommend a decent bluetooth adapter since the cheapos tend to have a lot of noise and can scramble your data giving you the wrong readings. Hope that helps.
If you find yourself a Slave module Bluetooth device
