Tdc doesnt matter. Just clock the rotor shaft to line up with the slot in the cam, and stuff it in. Itll only fit in one way. If you try putting it back in backwards itll bind amd wont slip in.

The service manual does state that but I've never done it with no issues.

The engine can be anywhere it ended up when you turned it off last.

See the slot in the end of the exhaust camshaft? It's slightly off-center. There's a tab on the distributor shaft that's also slightly off-center. You turn the distributor shaft so that the off-centers are on the same side, and install the distributor. Tab will go into slot, and you're done.

If you've got it lined up right, the distributor housing will sit flush against the head. If it's not flush, DON'T JUST USE THE BOLTS TO FORCE IT HOME! Recheck your tab/slot alignment and try again.

Adjust the ignition timing after the distributor is hooked up again.
