Is our ITR engine fully balanced from factory?
I seriously doubt it. Otherwise there would be no point to Mugen selling B18C Spec R crate motors, that have been balanced, and that's it. So unless someone knows otherwise, I would assume no. HTH
Fully balance as in complete blue printing of the engine?? No there is some room for further improvement
However there is some additional balancing done on a few B18C5 parts compared to the B18C1 to allow the additional rpm and compression.

how does that explain the 'mugen' valve springs?

No,There are too many Type R's for them to balance and blueprint each one.
It would take them 3 times as long to build each motor, and cost more due to more tooling more skilled workers and extra time to pay those workers. Then it would trickle down to the consumer in the form of a higher price, not as many consumers would buy and Honda wouldnt make as much money. And thats what everyone selling something cares most about.

I remember reading somewhere that the crank was balanced (more than a GSR) to handle the higher rpm and in turn makes the car idle smoother. I'm sure there is lots of room for improvement though.
"High-rigidity forged crankshaft with eight full balance weights"
That must have been what I read.

Thanks for the posts guys. This in some way answer my Q about the balancing. I know the engine is not blueprinted because, like someone said, it would take too long to get the engine out of the production line and more expenses for Honda at that point. So, I imagine the engine, in its stock form, has a lil more potential if it was fully balanced. But, who wants to tear appart a perfectly good engine to perform such an upgrade? At least have to wait until the engine wears out along time or wait until something breaks to redo the whole engine. I've read some about race engines and full balance does a big difference in horsepower.

Pistons and rods are also hand-picked [or MATCHED] by weight, however. I recall reading that they are within 0.001 oz of each other...

there is one exception to the rule: the HART racing Civic SiR's were stopped on the assembly line and every racing part added was balanced and blueprinted as they built those 2 cars. This info was from one of the senior pit crew members I talked to....

"These Type R parts are made with such precision that the weight difference between all four rods is so small that it is negligible."

theres should always be room for improvement.. and.. it also depends on each motor.. if you got a sunda/friday or monday motor.. as some may be more off balance than others... and why you see so hi/low dyno numbers on same type of car..
