S40 (p4a - a000) Transmission Questions
The little sticker tells you NOTHING about the tranny gearing, only what generation it is.
L3 = 88-91
S20 = 92-95
S40 = 96-00
To TRUELY know if you have a small bearing case or a large bearing case, you must find the casting numbers near the oil fill plug.
96-00
P4A-A000 = small bearing case = DX/HX/LX etc.
P4A-B000 = large bearing case = EX
L3 = 88-91
S20 = 92-95
S40 = 96-00

I have a question , I got an s40 today cuz my s20 gave out on me . the tranny says , p4a - a000 . can you elaborate what it exactly means by smaller bearing case ? and if there's anything I have to change or be aware of while shifting and stuff .
I'd appreciate the advice .

35mm diff bearings vs 40mm for a B000 trans. A000 means it's a CX/VX or DX/LX trans, depending in exactly what it is it's geared either long, or really long. None of this matters in terms of it just bolting up and working. the only thing you need to change is the upper transmission mount(assuming it even has one bolted to the trans) unless it happened to be in a '92 - '95 civic last.
