Problem with starting 02 accord after it's been sitting for a year
My buddy has a 2002 accord and last night I went over to give him a hand and try getting it running again. A little less than a year ago he drove the car every day but got a dwi and parked it and it's sat since.
So first thing I did was put a new battery in it and crank it over. turns over easily but won't fire up without starter fluid, and will only stay running if you keep spraying starter fluid. So I was thinking fuel pump. I checked the fuse inside the car by the drivers door and it was good, although I cannot hear the pump turn on when I turn they key. Should I be able to hear the pump kick on? I can hear the pump in my s2000 when I turn my key.
Any suggestions?
thanks

The pump is easy to get to on this car, from the trunk, just open the panel and there you are......check to see if you get power to the pump for a few seconds when you turn the key to "on"/pos II. You can then check to see if the pump runs for a few seconds (put your hand right on it) when the key is again turns to "on"/pos II. If it sat for that long, it could have "gummed" up the pump.
You dont even have to get to the pump to know its working. You can usually hear it pumping in most cars when you first turn the key.
Yes, but you have to listen very well....all noises off - blower, radio, no "beeps" from the dash, ect......and then you have to know what you are listening for. Even still if you can't "hear it", I would not replace it until I CONFIRM power to the pump and it is not running.....hence, 5 minutes with a test light/ volt meter and it is stupid easy to get to the pump on these.
Even if you "don't hear it", you still don't know "why". Is it getting power and not running......is it not getting power at all.......So if you don't hear it, what have you learned......NOTHING. You still have to figure out if power is getting to it or not, so why not cut to the chase and find out.
Good luck.

Im not quite sure about how loud it is in the 6th gen but I know in my 5th gen accord and 7th gen civic you could hear the pump priming. I haven't driven my 7th gen accord in a while but if I remember you can faintly hear it in there too. In other words, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to hear it when you turn the key.
