Default How does ECU chipping works?

Hy guys, I wonder how ECU chipping works? I know it is possible to swap the main chip on the ecu board to change the vtec crossover point, ignition and fuel curves, buy I would like more information on this matter. How easy it is, can I program any ecu to run with any car?

Any good site?

If you ask where I'm heading, I am about to purchase a JDM type-R integra engine, my car is currently OBD1 and I want to know what are my options for the ECU.

Thanks
