Default blown ECU but car runs? scanner wont read

I,m working on a Lexus Lx470 for a friend. His wife hooked up jumper cables backwards. I got the car running, but my obd2 scanner will not read the ECU. I took it apart and nothing is burnt or brown.
Why wont my scanner work?
Is it possible for the car to run with a bad ecu?

Non Honda question on honda-tech...

No clue about the specific car in question, but some cars do have a backup within the ECU that allows running in a limp mode without full ECU functionality.

x2.
and the ecu is almost definitely fried. hooking jumper cables backwards almost always fries the ecu in almost any car.

check all fuses though first to be sure, may have just popped a fuse or 2, or 20
