Does a head gasket mean a new motor?????
Drove my wife's Odyssey this am.........noticed a lack of heat.........temp gauge was fine......
notice a small amount of "radiator" smoke....checked looked like the water pump may be leaking.....gauges still good.........drove about 2 miles to a service station...........temp gauge bounced from normal to high.....a couple of times........
it appears the head gasket is blown......the tech is saying the engine is trashed.....and I should not plan on repairing this van. So Does a blown head gasket mean....a new engine?
2003 Honda Odyssey
156K miles....
Thanks

Generally no, but it depends on how hot the engine got, is the head warped? deck block surface warped? etc. Aluminum block engines are pretty sensitive to excessive heat, it's not a Honda thing, just an aluminum engine thing.
Haven't pulled the heads yet....that will be tomorrow......I will be having a local shop work on it........one place said junk it.......I found on one forum issues with head bolts stripping.....I will keep my fingers crossed....jasper doesn't due this engine I'm told.....
More later and thanks for the input....

I would get my van out of that shop asap man , condeming a motor just for the headgasket is a big mistake specially if you know what you are doing , service station and independent shop tend to do it like that to cover their asses , u might need a heater valve and a new tbelt , water pump
