2000 Honda Accord - Maintenance Suggestions
I need reccomendations for preventive Maintenance on a 2000 Honda Accord that i just purchased. Just went through a bad Transaxle on a 1998 Accord and I don't want to create a problem where there is not one on this car. The car is in New Condition and has been maintained well. It has a lot of miles (390000) but has been maintained at the reccomended intervals(timing belt (2), oil, etc) but im not sure about the transaxle fluid changes. Im just scared to change anything with the outcome of my last Accord. It seemed to go from bad to undrivable with multiple drains and refills using Seafoam T-T. I realize that this didn't cause the problem, just highlighted an exsisting one. What would you suggest knowing that this car currently drives perfect and looks brand knew. Just continue to service regularly???? thanks for any input.
Wow I have a 2000 SE with 190k miles, car drove great with 182k when I got it. Fluid in AT was brown so installed a Magnefine inline filter and did 4X changes with Valvoline MaxLife® DEX/MERC ATF. Car drives like new. I will do 2x ever oil change of 15k using Mobil1 extended use motor oil. I buy both at Walmart. There are also screens on the solenoid valves that can get clogged. They all mount outside of the case. I plan to replace my screens this winter when my friends shop slows down. Search around here, lots of great info. Also had a 98 EX 5 speed with 250k, hit a dear. Was a great car.
Many here will tell you to use Honda ATF. It's your call. The 6th gen accord 98-02, had doggy AT's. There's evidence that high quality synthetic ATF like MaxLife, Red Line and Ams all seam to work well in these unless the AT is already failing. Never use a flushing machine.
Do they use salt on the roads where you live? If so inspect break and fuel lines under car. Mine need changing. Another winter project.

At 390000 miles you should be on timing belt number 4, not timing belt 2 (or 3).
You're also so far in its life that I wouldn't touch the transmission fluid.
