Default ~ 2005 Accord V6 with Bad transmission at only 38,160 miles ~

So last week my gf's parents 2005 Accord broke down in the middle of San Francisco. I had the car towed to the Honda dealer and they just contacted me back saying the transmission is bad at 38k. They bought the car brand new from Honda, so it's not salvage or anything. They've taken meticulous care of the car, all the oil changes on time, however i have not see anything else required under the maintenance schedule.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had had this problem? This seems all very odd, a honda with a transmission problem at only 38k? This has got to be a design or manufacture defect. Well honda said they would be willing to pay for 50% of the cost and not all because the car is out of the basic 3 year 36,000 mile warranty, but that will still cost us $2,000. Just doesn't seem right, after paying close to 30k for a car, and only 38k later, needing a to pay an extra $2,000 for a transmission.

I know the 2006 models have a 5 year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty, which i asked the service guy, had i had that everything would be fixed under warranty. Which i feel is totally not fair, same car, just different year, but you get a different warranty.

Sorry to hear that. I have heard Honda have done some "goodwill" repairs so the fact that your dealer is going to half the cost is a good start.

It's up to you. Do you want to accept it? Or push the issue by contacting a district manager? 38K vs 36K is about a month of driving for me. So you may get lucky.

I used to live in SF bay area, and how the hills and dips can be hard on a transmission. I hate to drive in SF. Have the transmission been serviced prior? But that's not an excuse for it going bad at 38K.

I mean 2K difference. I sometimes drive 2K a month. So they may be nice since he is just over 2K.

This reminds me of a side story. I had to get my mirror fix when my 97 Civic had 35,800 miles. I told the dealer, you must give me a appointment because my time was almost up. Came in at like 5pm. Show them my power mirror was not working.

When the parts came in, I was actually over 36K.

I know that the dealer ship here is generally pretty good about that type of stuff. They gave me a hard time about my 99 accord with 132k on it. they said the trans was way past the service date for replacement. Wrote honda corp....trans got replaced for free.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord, two months after I purchased it I heard a whistling sound. I took it in to Honda Serramonte and they said they could not find anything wrong with the car. I was relentless for the following 4 months and finally they said it might be a transmission problem so they replaced the transmission on a car that was only 6 months old.

I recently had my transmission go out on me after taking very good care of my car and having it serviced by Honda all these years. When I took it in they said my car had a whistling noise and I needed a new transmission. I now have 83k miles on the car but have kept up all my maintenance on the car since 2005.

Can anyone please share anything similar? I plan on contacting Honda corporate and even higher if need be.

I have an 05 accord with 32k and the fuel economy is very bad [47% worse than published]. I cannot say than I hear a whistling sound but I am certain that something in teh shift control or trans is a problem. Did your car consume extra fuel or have a soft shifting transmission that did not seem to want to stay in any particular gear? I have extended warranty left so i woudl liek to put it to good use.

Mine failed in my 04 accord after 4 years @ around 70k. My dealer worked with Honda and replaced it free of charge, no questions asked.

Call Honda of America and ask for a goodwill repair.

They ended up charging me 50% of the bill. I believe the total came out to alittle over 4k so i had to pay 2k for the repair.

Thanks for the update. You mentioned the car was well taken care of. Do you know if the ATF was changed, at around 30K miles?

the issue was not the 2,000 miles guys...

he was 3-4 years out of the warranty.. 50% is a steal on a non warranty transmission.

glad to see it's all fixed up OP

theres a known issue with those v6 accord trans going bad in that gen accord honda does cover most of em that bitch but call american honda don't deal with the zone rep they normally just say NO thats my advice for anyone needing one i have done a bunch under COD and done a bunch as a split be it 30/70 50/50 or 20/80 hell some help is better than none.

but to answer OP's question yes i have seen those transmissions with even less miles for no reason.
