85 Honda Civic 1300 cold start high idle questions
Hello everyone,
I've been lurking on the forums for a few weeks and I can't seem to find any solutions to my problem here.
I have recently picked up a 1985 Civic hatchback with a carbureted 1300 motor, EV1 I believe. Everything appears OEM to me. I was told the clutch, throwout bearing, and carburetor had been recently replaced with OEM parts.
From a cold start the engine idles very fast/high, almost sounds as if it is redlining but not quite that high. Pressing the accelerator, as you normally would to assist in dropping the idle, it seems to idle higher. Once we reach operating temp I can tap the accelerator again and everything drops down to normal. I thought at first this could be my carb float that needs adjustment. Other forum posts have pointed to possible vacuum leak issues.
Has anyone else experience this before? Any solutions? I don't want to just start messing with the carb float if that is not the origin of the problem.
I know that for a carbureted car there is a higher idle from a cold start while it warms up. My idle seems WAY too high for normal conditions. Ambient air temp in the morning is about 60-65 degrees F.
Any help or troubleshooting advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
