k20a2 missing oil pickup stuff???
Hi all,
I'm fairly new to the k-series motors (been around b-series a little though). I recently picked up a car with a k20a2. The oil pan was cracked, i sourced a guy locally who has tonsssss of honda parts. Called him about an oil pan, and he had a k20a3 he was parting out. After doing a little digging, I found out they match up pretty well, and this casted pan will hold up a lot better than the type s aluminum pans, and the price was very right.
When I removed my oil pan from my a2, and then removed the oil pan from the a3, I noticed that my a2 is missing a long oval assembly that goes around the oil pickup. To reiterate, my a2 has just an oil pickup (dented too a little), and this a3 had something that I can only describe as a oval cylinder-like assembly that goes around the oil pickup.
A quick google search, and this is what i found. This is from k20a.org and says its a k24 oil pump. But I found the same assembly in an a3?

My questions are, do I need this other piece for my oil pump? Can I live without it? Currently, when I emptied the oil, I also noticed that I needed close to 6 quarts of oil to keep the oil light from blinking. Any input is appreciated.

The k20a3 has balance shafts like the k24 engines. The k20a2 doesn't have that. It's more simple. Making the pump look smaller. The aluminum oil pans are far better then the stamped steel ones. More rigid. That's why they came on the a2 motor. If I was you I would source another aluminum oil pan.
Here's a few better pics of what I am saying.

To my knowledge, the a2 and a3 oil pumps are the same. I may have answered my own question as to how necessary it is. But what is this part called, and how necessary is it? I am sure I can get it for a fair price, just let me know what you think.

They are not the same. Two different pumps with two different part numbers.

No balance shafts = more drag on the crankshaft. Less hp. Stay with the a2 oil pump. If you are concerned about the dented one replace it with new a2 pump. The k20a3 is like an economy engine compared to the high performance k20a2.
Yea i finally got to your post. Thanks for helping me sort it out again. Ill ride with this a3 pan for sometime until I can source another a2 oil pan, or better yet, a tsx pan because I hear thats what all the cool kids are doing.

Just went through a little bit of your thread. What a great build!!! I knew the previous owner of this car, and I remember him driving it and having a tps issue as well. Currently the tps is pinned. What's your take on that? Should I also look into a k-tuned tps sensor in time?
And on another note. Im in your neck of the woods today. Feel like making a new friend, welding this cracked oil pan and making a little change? Pm me if so. I know its really random, but let me know
You knew the previous owner? Did he trade it in at the chevy dealership at the avenues. Because that's were I picked it up at, back in December of 2010.The car salesmen told me that the previous owner traded it in for a Acura MDX. AS for the tps I would get a k tuned one if you are upgrading the throttle body. That's the main reason I did mine. I bought one cheap one and it broke with in days of buying it. So then just went out and bought the indestructible k tuned tps. If you are using a stock throttle body I wouldn't worry about it unless its broke.

I meant i knew the previous owner of my car not yours, sorry for the confusion. Im pretty sure that the throttle body is not stock on mine. As i said before, the tps is pinned and while i dont see too much of an issue besides the throttle being very sensitive to my foot in low rpms, i am wondering if keeping it pinned would lead to any issues.
