why synchros go bad?
Hey i searched but couldnt find an answer. What exactly causes synchros to wear out?
Is it age, or do they only go bad depending on how you drive your car? Can bad syncro actually make your actual gears go bad to?
Thanks

It's a wear item so it will eventually go bad. It's like the Brake Pads of your Transmission.
Things that will accel the wear are:
- Shitty Drivers
- Worn Shifter Bushings
- Old broken down Trans Fluid
- Shitty Drivers
- Power Shifting
- Clutchless Shifting
- And I think Shitty Drivers

So the purpose of a Syncro, if I remember correctly, is to match transmission speed to engine speed. So to reduce wear on the Syncros, if you are going to downshift, you need to rev-match so that the Syncros don't do it all for you. Example, you're on the freeway going 60mph, you decide you want to stomp on it and throw the tranny into 3rd gear, what you would do to reduce wear is; clutch in, rev to 5-6k, shifter into 3rd, clutch out. You do that, your tranny will be in good shape for a long time.
