2000 Odyssey - TC 0420, 0706, 0430
So my mom's check engine light has been on for quite some time, and I wanna fix the underlying issue so she can pass emissions. It's not extremely urgent, because we have until next June to get the CEL off. I just want to get it taken care of sooner rather than later. Took it to AutoZone to get the code read today, and came back with three codes:
P0420 - Catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1
P0430 - Catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 2
P0706 - Open in transmission range switch circuit
Now they gave me a little print-out with the probable causes, but I'm assuming it's very likely that the 0420 and 0430 would be due to a bad catalytic converter . I was reading that it's common for this year range Odysseys to burn through cats pretty quickly? They both have the same possible causes:
- A/F ratio concern
- Air leak near H02S bank 1 or 2
- Ignition system concern
- Faulty catalytic converter
Whereas the other code (0706) has other possible causes: short or open in the circuit, bad electrical connection, or faulty transmission range switch.
I don't really know where to start - the vehicle seems to run fine, no surging idling issues or anything, so I wouldn't assume an air leak (at least not a large one). And I was reading that if the transmission range switch was bad, it is commonly due to it being damaged while removing/replacing the transmission. I was also reading that this would cause the car to start in gears other than Park, which it doesn't - or it would cause the reverse lights to not work, which they do. I should mention that this is on its third transmission - first was immediately when the car was bought (new), second was around 120,000 if I remember correctly, and third was around 150 or so? Not positive on that one. The car has about 160k on it now.
So would the best thing to do at this point be to bite the bullet and replace the catalytic converter / try to diagnose whether or not the TRS is actually bad? Or should I take steps before just throwing a new cat on there and hoping it fixes it?
