Valves noisey after valve adjustment?
Recently I did a valve adjustment on my 2001 CR-V with 127,000 miles on the clock. I set the valves to .005/.006 on the intake and .008/.009 on the exhaust like I've read and I made sure all the jam nuts were tight. While driving with the radio off, I can hear the valves inside the car; even over my exhaust with no resonator and a can-type muffler. Is this normal? Are the valves just noisy? Or should I go back inside the motor and check things out?
Before I did mine, the valves sounded like a sewing machine. When i checked them they were way too loose. After the adjustment It was much much more quiet. You may have not torqued them down...Yes torqued them down properly. I did mine when the motor was still cold too if that helps.
yeah cold is important. the only other thing I can think, did you double check the clearance after tightening the nuts? not to be captain obvious but they can move and even just a tad can possibly get you out of spec. just a thought, I wasn't very meticulous my first time, but even then I didn't have a problem.
I did the adjustment cold and im 95% sure of the clearances. I just tightened the nuts down by hand with a wrench, whats the actual torque spec? maybe i'll just open it up this weekend and double check since I have to drive the car 14 hours from NY to SC next Friday
I can't remember exactly wat ft-lbs but what I did was tightened it down by hand first than ran the torque wrench over the nut and re-checked my clearance.
I have never put a torque wrench on a valve adjustment nut. Snug works. Lol.
The engine needs to be dead cold when you set the lash, like not been driven in 12 hours type cold. It is pretty easy to move the adjuster while tightening the jam nut. That could be your problem.
The point of the space in between the valve and rocker when cold is that when everything heats up and expands, there is almost no space between the valve and rocker. You shouldn't be able to hear the valves when warm. Not cold either really.

strange that this thread comes up. I did a valve adjustment after replacing the tbelt and water pump, but then I noticed after it would blow smoke at idle? I am now wondering if I loosened the valves too much, but when I adjusted the valves I made sure to keep the exhaust valves a tad bit looser than .008 , just to be safe. should I got back and tighten them up?
I just went back through mine and they were all in spec aside from 1 exhaust valve that had .009 clearance and 3 intake that had .004 clearance. The valves are quiet at an idle, its jus when your on the gas that they tick. I cant hear them over the radio but with the radio off I hear them over my exhaust still. Maybe theyre just noisy
