93 civic hatch s20 transmission problems.
First off I would like to say I have researched the noise my transmission makes and most think its the input shaft bearing, and I'm inclined to agree. I want to post this question in hopes that someone might have more insight into my situation. The car has 193k km and it looks like the trans has been worked on before. The biggest issue is that the grinding noise is intermittent. But here's my question...
My transmission makes a gravely grinding sound when I take off and continues to make the sound through 2nd gear. When it's parked I can shift into neutral and engage the clutch and the transmission kinda howls/ makes the grinding sound very lightly. It also make that sound if I leave it in gear and come to a slow down. I have changed the oil in the transmission and it didn't make a difference. Now I want you to understand it doesn't make this sound all the time. I can drive it all day without it making a sound but as soon as I let off the throttle it makes the grinding sound and the proceeds to do it from then on. Also if I slip the clutch a little more on take off it doesn't make the sound. I've broke many manual transmissions but never had to tear one apart so if this is something other than the input/ countershaft bearing I need to know. Either way if the transmission comes out its getting a new clutch. Finding a good used transmission here in Germany has turned out to be harder than I thought and the one I did find is 400 euros. I can rebuild my trans and install a new clutch for half of that.
I have decided to bring my novel of a question to the source and I apologize for its length. I just want to be as thorough as possible. Also the transmission shifts smoothly. Thank you for your time.
