Default clutch problems, d series turbo

Okay heres my problem and story. I have a 96 civic d16y8 turbo. 250whp. I had my transmission go out on my. So I replaced the trans and put in a clutxh a friend had left over thay was like "new", clutch flywheeland pressure plate had flywheel resurfaced. He said ot was good and plenty strong enough. I got everything back together and went for a drive felt like the clutch wasnt there...drove it some and about 500 miles later it feel great just like it used to. Well except its hard to put in different gear when rolling. Like slowing down and dropping it into second. Also hard to put in first at a stop at times. Also slips sometimes when beating on it. No noticable leaks from sale or master. Is the clutch just bad? Also I have a question about the travel that is supposed to be in the slave? How far is it supposed to travel? Is it possible its not moving enough? Thanks for the help!
