Clutch Problem? Can't shift into 1st/reverse gears
Hey all,
I'm starting to have trouble shifting into 1st gear and reverse on my gsr (1999, 40,000 miles). Seems like the shifter is locked out; I've often circumvented the problem by putting the car in 2nd gear before shifting to first, and likewise 4th gear before entering reverse. I know 1st and reverse don't have synchros but these transmission troubles occur when the car is at full-stop (duh
)
Seems like my clutch is failing to engage sometimes. I read a similar thread on here regardling tranny problems ( https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=81257 ), and I'm thinking that replacing my clutch fluid will solve the problem. What do you guys think? Thanks...

i think that if it was your fluid it would not just pick two gears to only do it in. Also I think that first does have syncros I believe, but reverse doesn't. But try putting in fluid you never know. good luck hope it fixes the problem.

are you think about changing tranny fluid? that's usually what people do when the shifter feels rough.
Yes tranny fluid that's what I meant. At what mileage intervals are you supposed to change it?
1st has no synchro? Guess I'm with half the others on this forum
So reverse has no synchro and first must have some type of lock-out above a certain rpm. Took quite a bit of revmatching to downshift to 1st (SoloII course)
Thanks for the responses

i'm sorry if i was confusing. i believe 1st has a synchro.
my helm's says tranny fluid should be replaced at 90k. you're a long ways off. did you abuse your 1st gear? it shouldn't be gone that fast.

1st definetly has a sychro, try downshifting from 2nd to 1st at >15mph, it'll go in nice and smooth. Reverse dosen't have a sychro, try going into reverse when rolling backwards down a hill, it'll grind. 1st has a shift guard to keep you from throwing it back into 1st when trying to shift from 2nd to 3rd (cause that would be very unpleasant), and that's why you can't downshift into 1st at 20mph or so.
I had the same prob w/ my 97 GSR w/ 84K. Wouln't go into 1st and R from a dead stop. I got my tranny fluid completely pumped out at a dealership and tranny fluid replaced.. shifts were only SLIGHTLY smoother, could barely tell the difference, but the problem still persisted. After experiencing many other cars, I personally love my GSR, but think that honda clutches suck. Ive seen plenty of 240sx's with 130K clutches with no probs/slip. But anyway, my problem of being locked out of 1st at stoplights has gone away, although it doesnt slide into gear SILKY SMOOTH LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO.. ill probably get an ACT soon.

i thought smoothness of shifting only has to do with the transmission and not the clutch. i don't know what the clutch has to do with your shifter.
