K20 - JE pistons on stock rods - how stupid?
Hello,
Am making the thread to vent some frustration and have you opinion about a genius that i know.
Well, i sold some JE pistons to this guy, they are K20 pistons with a comp of 11.
THe good guy is starting to use them now, and he is adamant to put them on stock rods. My words to him were forged is the way to go.
Any how - now he bought PRB rods and when installing the pistons he realizes the piston pin is thicker on the pistons.
THe spec being:
Stock service limit for rods is 21.853mm
The listed outer dia on JE is 21.994mm
So now let me ask you....
1. right course of action? I assure you if i suggest him anything he wont listen but i think i could learn from you all at least.
2. Negative and positive effects of this operation blue star!
Regards

Honda makes some pretty good rods so its not too crazy that some people will choose to stick with them. Obviously, the rod will need to go past the service limit a few thousandths to fit the pin with the right clearance. I have done this before without issue but not everyone feels the same way about it.

So basically, just take the rod to the machine shop and they can hone it for making the pin fit and a tight clearance?

Yes, any decent machine shop can take care of that. I get aftermarket rods and pistons sets every once and a while that have the clearances too tight.
