Default m2b4 differential speedo gear

Ok i have been chasing down speedometer issues ever since i owned the car.. I had success until about two weeks ago.. Ok speedo works in reverse put it in first take off the speedo goes to about 15 then quits.. I pulled the speed sensor out and tried moving the gear on the diff and it moves about a half inch towards the driver side.. Ok i finally think i figured this out my question now is how is the speedo gear attached to the diff? Is it pressed on? Seeing how i can move it does that mean it wont be able to pressed on again? I have had the tranny apart and dont remember physically checking that gear besides for wear.. Ill get pictures if needed just let me know..
