Advice on Valve Selection for JDM B18cR
Hello everyone. Recently ended up bending all of my exhaust valves and would like some recommendations regarding the valvetrain. I am at least going to upgrade all of the valves, get new valves seals and probably some bronze valve guides. The engine is in a 95 civic and is my DD. I am not upgrading the cams but might down the road.
I came across this while searching: http://www.jhpusa.com/store/pc/viewP...&idcategory=23
Does anyone have any experience with supertech? Should I instead look at skunk2 or ferrea? I don't know if I will get the entire kit yet or not but it is appealing. Thanks in advance!

the supertech valves have a bad rep and have broken on more than one occasion. their springs and retainers are awesome and i highly recommend them. honestly id just use oem valves. they hold up really well in my experiences
In the 100 or so sets I have sold of Supertech valves I have never had any break and the only time I wrecked some was when a cam gear came lose and it bent all the exhaust valves and a couple of intakes. If your just DDing this car STD valves are 100% fine with Supertech valve springs just buy the steel retainers and you will be fine.
I have read complaints of supertech valves on here but I have used a few dozen sets with no major issues. I did have a head brought to me with a valve that was mushrooming but it was very minor. I use oem in my own personal builds.
So whats wrong with using OEM ITR valves? ITR has better valves then the other B series motors and there is really no need to use anything other than OEM guides. Swapping to an aftermarket valve is pointless IMO unless you want flat faced valves to increase compression or are going over sized.
Thanks for the advice guys. Does anyone else want to chime in?
If I stick with oem ITR valves, should I also stick with the oem springs/retainers or should I go ahead and upgrade them to the supertechs? Any other brands worth looking at in the same price bracket? I was looking for supertech steel retainers but didn't come across any. jhpusa only has aluminum and titanium, Ive heard that steel is more durable than either if not as light.

In a DD that see's 99% of its life on the road the steel retainers are best, valves OEM are perfectly fine but I always talk my customers into new upgraded valve springs with the cost of them these days its cheap insurance.
and the 02-03 rsx retainers seem to be the best bang for the buck. i have a set along with the 70lb supertech dual springs waiting to go into the next motor i build
Anyone know where to find oem itr valves? Inlinefour.com has intake. I am planning on getting new guides since I didn't know if I damaged them when I bent the valves.
Found these retainers: http://www.ipgparts.com/store/Supert...c-Engines.html
Found them on a couple of sites.

Also how does bronze guides stand up to daily driving. I put close to 500 miles on it a week.
As of now after reading everyones advice, I'm going with oem valves with supertech springs and steel retainers.

blackeg is very right about the OEM K series retainers they are very good and come highly recommended by alot of user's of them.
And you wont go wrong buying from IPG James and Tom are very good to deal with, shoot them an email about OEM parts I have purchased alot thru them.

So I was quoted a price of $512 for the OEM ITR valves, which is out of my price range. Another member offered me a great deal on a set of new skunk2 pro series valves (std compression) and supertech bronze guides. I have heard everything from good to bad about skunk2 valves and that most people prefer supertech or Ferrea. I have also heard that they are the same exact valves.
So skunk2 pro series valves, supertech springs, RSX retainers, supertech bronze guides? Can I reuse the OEM keepers? Machine shop will be installing the guides and re-centering the valve seats.
