Default Throw out bearing or main shaft bearing going bad?

When I'm at idle/nuetral with no foot on the brake or clutch pedal I hear a rattle noise. I've looked here on the forums with similar problems. Some people on some posts say "Throw out bearing" some say "Main Shaft bearing", which confuses me! When I push the clutch pedal down the sound goes away. How would I know what part it is? I'm pretty sure the clutch is new because it grabs hard and jerks pretty well when shifting, and the previously owner stated it was replaced a few months before I bought it(I know that's his say).

Now that being that said and if answered, how would I go about replacing it and how many hours and tools am I looking at? What will happen if this part(what ever it is) isn't replaced? Where would I get the part the cheapest and quality? I usually go to orlelly auto parts to buy my parts. Would like to go there for the part if possible! A part # or link would be helpful too!

Thanks for reading and answering if you do!

drive it til it breaks.
took me 20 hours to put in a clutch but i didnt have any help.
not something you want to do unless necessary esp. if it was just done.
(unless they did a crap job or it wasnt actually done).
turn up the stereo and forget about it, you'll know when it needs doing.
go to rockauto.com and look for the parts with the little hearts next to them,
those are always a good bet. then call orly and see if they stock them.
you'll need high temp urea grease from honda for the throw out bearing
tho some folks use different stuff. i have a jar just sitting around, pm me if you want it. also a tranny jack or floor jack attachment is a good idea.

Usually its the throw out bearing rattling around, when it's pushed in it has tension and won't make noise.
Main shaft bearing would make noise when car is moving and clutch not pushed in.

Alright thanks for the feedback. So I will be looking for a 2000 Honda Civic Si Throw out bearing? Even though I have a 99 Integra GSR Trans? Correct?

Also would it matter what clutch I have? or any throwout bearing work?

Throw out bearing aka Clutch Release Bearing?

you just need one to match your transmission, gsr unit would work fine.

See that's what I'll have trouble with. Not sure what Year my transmission is? Is there a way to find out? I didn't do the swap, the guy who i bought it from did. I can't get ahold of him either.

Since the code on the trans starts with s80 what yr make and model do I search for when searching for the part?

Please and Thankyou!

thats a mainshaft bearing. my z car had a worn mainshaft bearing, same noise. neuyral no clutch=noise. clutch in=no noise.

if it was the throwout bearing it would make no noise when idle and clutch out, and make noise with the clutch in

the mainshaft bearing makes noise when the clutch isnt pushed in because the mainshaft is spinning. when you push in the clutch the throgh out bearing starts spinning and the mainshaft stops spinning

it could be any bearing in the transmission. It is not a throw out bearing noise, as those happen when your foot is depressed on the pedal.

input shaft bearing is the most common, but in my case it was actually the countershaft bearing.

Alright. See mixed signals again! This is the same trouble I had when searching the problem, people were going back and forth saying it was one or the other.

The only time it makes noise is when no clutch pushed when in nuetral. No sound when I'm in gear driving.

Being that said.

So It's the mainshaft bearing? Is "mainshaft bearing" the correct name used when looking for a part? Any links to the part and how to replace?

Please and thankyou!

if its the mainshaft bearing, or any bearing in the transmission its better to bring the transmission in to have a full rebuild. its better to replace every old part rather than patch one part going bad only to have another part fail later on.
