Default "New" auto tranny wont fit to engine block?

I have a d16y8 with an auto tranny that went out. I pulled a tranny off of a y7 and in the process of getting it fit back in. I got the tranny in the bay and bolted up to the correct holes but once it gets almost fitted to the block I can't get it to close all the way. There is maybe an 8th on an inch of space left to go and I don't know what im doing wrong. It almost feels like it is crimping something but there is nothing there that I can tell.

I only have use of the driveway for a couple of days and need to get it in ASAP so im freakin out a little bit.

Does the torque converter need to come off or be urned a certain way?

Is there a certain way the main shaft is supposed to go into the block?

should the tranny have been shifted into neutral before putting it on the block?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

You need to get the trans to mate with the engine properly before you bolt up anything. The splines need to be aligned for it to go in all the way. You may need some wiggling, shaking, a little rotating and pushing to get all the way in.

Thanks! I will unmount it and try that when I get home. I thought they would have been lined up since it went in a couple of inches and there is just that little bit of space. I figured that since I had it wthat far in already that they would have been lined up.

Is there a good way to know if they are lined up and is there a way to adjust it without taking the tranny all the way off? Should the tranny snug up to the block before I bolt it?

tranny and block should def be flush with eachother before bolting it together or you risk stripping threads on the block which you really don't wanna do

Is it possible that there is something in the hole where the main shaft goes from the last tranny?

Make sure you rotate the torque converter and and it drops down into the transmission before installing the trans.

Also, a Y7 trans wont work properly, different 3rd gear ratio. It will throw a P0715 cel and shift a bit weird. (if you have to pass emissions this is important)
