Default New member, looking for a little info

Hey all, new to the site but not new to forums, just looking for a little info.

For some background info I owned a 92 accord coupe ex 5 speed (cb7 I believe?) For 3 years, wasn't really going for performance but it had the usual intake, exhaust, removed some weight. I planned on boosting it this year but unfortunately lost my job and sold it to cover bills in december. Went to buy it back last month and the kid totalled it. As for experience i've worked at many shops and I am currently at a toyota dealer. I have helped mod a few friends mod their cars (12 second cavi, cobalt ss turbo, audi a4, 500hp+ first gen eclipse) but I never heavily got into it myself, paintball usually takes my spending money.

I was looking for another cb7 but can't find a clean one anywhere local, they're all auto and working in shops the last 8 years kinda burned me out from doing any major work at home so not looking to swap.

Figured i'd look into something a little newer, specifically a 6th gen but don't know much about them. Here are my questions:

Is the f23 a strong engine? I put my f22 through hell, literally, and it still ran. That's part of the reason I loved it.

Any common issues with the 6th gen that I should know about?

I have heard from a few sources the 6th gens up north have issues with the engine cradle rotting away, supposedly water is drained right onto it. How common is this? I live in ohio right now, heavy salt in winter, plan on moving back to PGH next year.

Any other info you think I should know feel free to post, my plans aren't anything serious, just suspension and bolts ons at first then possibly boost down the road

Sorry for the book, and thanks for taking the time to read, I appreciate the help.

F23A1's actually use the same block as all of the other F/H's. I'm not 100% certain that they retain the cast iron sleeves like the F22's do, but I've seen them last. The automatic transmissions in the 6th gen Accords specifically the V6's are junk. The cradle rots from the AC evaporator draining onto them so they stay constantly damp. The hose can easily be relocated to drain elsewhere.

Thanks for the fast response man, good to know. I have heard to stay away from the v6 auto's already which is fine because I have no interest in a v6, or an auto.

Is the cradle issue really serious, like would most likely need replaced, or get the car in the air and go from there? All my tools are at work and we've been busy so shop time is extremely limited right now.

Thanks

Here's some pics of my old one.

Mods included
intake, ebay header, custom made header-back made by yours truly, battery relocation, gutted trunk, ac delete, cruise control delete, drilled and slotted rotors.
In the time I owned it I had to replace the entire fuel system, braking system, and perform the last 5 years of maintnence from the previous owner's neglect.

Clean interior! Curious how you did your battery relocation, mine seems to be causing issues with the starter so I have to bump start mine 75% of the time. The cradle issue would honestly depend on how bad it is, really you can't just throw a guestimation out there without seeing it. I would imagine you would be able to replace it, perhaps from a junk yard if need be.

Thanks, and that's without it ever being steam cleaned. The relocate was one of the first things i did so I don't remember too well. Found a thick wire in a 240 at a junkyard, ran it under the seats and carpet, through the firewall and to the starter, at first we had issues but I believe all we did was add a thicker ground wire. The one I originally tried using was tiny, and old as hell.

As for the 6th gen cradle, the only accord that matches what i'm looking for I found local is at a small lot. He doesn't seem too motivated to let me put it in the air to look at it, and I don't want to drive 4+ hours south unless I know exactly what to look for.

Also what should I be looking to pay. The one at the lot is 4grand out the door
00 accord ex coupe 4 cyl 5 speed. 170k miles, clean leather, clean looking exterior
Timing belt and water pump already done 20k miles ago.

that fair if it doesn't need anything major? I assume it will need some suspension or brake work.

That seems pretty good. Basically the general condition of the car will be your biggest factor in purchasing it for that price or not.

Just some thoughts on the relocation of the battery. A long time ago when I used to race SCCA, I relocated the battery (not a Honda) to the rear. I used cables for an electric welder I purchased at a welding supply store. I bought the cable ends there and soldered them on and even mounted the plug-in receptacles on the side of the rear fender so I could use a charger or external battery when in the pits. Worked great. But as an alternative, BMW's have the battery in the trunk, so you could strip the wire out of one at the salvage yard.

I always thought about tearing the cables out of an SSEi supercharged Grand Am because they're battery's are in the back. I'll have to check the beamers today at my local yard.
