Default 92 Si Timming issue

I know there is alot of threads on setting ignition timing, I've read countless threads and I thought i did everything right. Here is what im dealing with.
Bought a 92 si hatch about a month ago and had to go get it smoked. Everything was stock so after i changed the fluids, spark plugs, coil pack I thought i would pass no problem. Turns out the cat was gutted so of course i didn't pass but what suprised me was the smog tech told me he couldn'e even run the test because my timing was off. So i jumped the ECU made sure the car was warm and tried to set the ignition timing so I could retest to pass smog(after I got a new cat of course). Well I moved the distributor as far as it could go and my timing is still off its still advanced father than the +2 degrees mark, but the car seems to run fine. Am i off a tooth?
Thankyou for your help. Or if i tried to set the timing incorrectly please let me know

Are you off a tooth? Did you check mechanical timing? It should be pretty obvious.

The P/O most likely didn't set the timing correctly and he adjusted the distributor to get it to crank. Set it back to "0" TDC and rotate the crank by hand (with a socket wrench of course). It will indicate if the timing is actually off or not.

Default ignition timing once again..... smog is my enemy

hey everybody, sorry for being repetitive but I just can't get my problem fixed and my last resort is taking it to a shop basically because I enjoy working on my car and I don't trust all the shops i've been to so far.

So my ignition timing is retard I have a D16z6 bone stock everything, passed the emissions on smog but they failed me saying my timing was off. TDC is 16 degrees and i'm suppose to be 2 degrees before that i believe.

I've jumped my ECU and tried to set it with my timing gun and the dizzy is at its limit and won't let me advance it anymore, I've searched and found of posts but of course they haven't followed up with a solution so any ideas would help me a ton and hopefully we can answer questions for anybody like me who has been searching. Ive taken it to a mechanic and he looked at it for about 10 minutes and guessed that i need a knew dizzy. Would that fix my problem?
-Thankyou

^^^ I agree. If you cant get the ignition timing right then you need to pull off the timing cover and check to make sure your mechanical timing is correct. Your timing belt is most likely a tooth off causing you to run out of travel on the dizzy. Be sure you are jumping the blue connector inside the glove box, it is tucked away all the way to the right by so larger wiring harness and before you do that run the car until the cooling fan comes on and goes off to be sure it is fully warmed up. Then set the ignition timing with your timing light.
