CLUTCH JOB
I'm getting a clutch job here in the next month or two. I got a quote at about 260 labor. Not too bad. I've used this mechanic before, they do good work. I was thinking today if they had the transmission out, couldn't they replace the transmission mount as well for next to nothing (just parts)? And how many of the mounts could they replace without adding on any labor? (I'm not really in the know of where exactly the 5 mounts are in my 95 ex, but i can at least see 3 of them. One is behind the engine, one is to the right of the engine, and one is way down on the side of the tranny.) So the question is, which mounts could I replace? Thanks guys.
i dont think they need replacing, but i know some day they will, and if i am gonna have the tranny off then i might as well do the ones that i can there.
So why are you posting up a poll asking if you need to replace them when you just stated that you are going to anyway?
BTW, you can replace them anytime, with the transmission on of off.

I don't know HOW to, and im almost certain that even if i actually did, i don't have the required tools, namely something to lift the car up really high. i'm not entirely sure what all the parts in the clutch kit is for.

if you don't have the tools required i'd let a shop do it, heck for 260$ I would but...I love working on my car and have plenty of time with summer break. in short all you really need is a floor jack 2 stands breaks bar(s) 1/2 and 3/4dr, 17,14,10,32,12 and 19mm sockets deep+shallow for some. can be done in a day if you have the energy took me a good full day my first time on my teg but that was solo no extra hands or air gun.
But i think in this case... doing something such as a transmission removal, Flywheel, Bearings, Clutch, fluid... is beyond ones ability??
It does require just a little more knowledge then watching a video for some.
My Opinion...
Leave the mounts alone...
$260 is CHEAP!
Tranny mount is the only one that'll be "free" to replace as far as labor goes.
$260 is a pretty good price.
I'd have to think hard about doing it myself if it's that cheap.
And I've pulled the tranny many a time...

IF you replace engine mounts it's best to do them all at once. That way you don't have one side of your engine able to move more than the other.
As mentioned before if you don't feel comfortable take it to a shop. That's a wise decision, and I paid $900 (parts and labor) for a clutch to be installed in my GTI, so $260 is quite a bargain for the labor.
This is a diagram of the mounts.

You can take this and find them in the car, basically anything that mounts to the engine and the shell is what you're looking for. Changing motor mounts is not difficult, a beginner DIY-er can tackle it in an afternoon.

changing mounts is easy, and something id trust to someone with a little mechanical no how.
but a tranny, no, maybe if the motor was already.out of the car.
but I dont see a reaason to change them, esp not a tranny mount, are they even known to fail?

Yes, all the time. The rear one. The upper transmission mount doesn't normally fail, lower torque mounts are almost always broken, but it wont make any difference if the the trans is in or out for replacing them. The rear one is easier to do with the transmission out, but it's still not that hard to do it with the trans in the car.
