This may seem like an elementary questions but does the flat smooth side of the exhaust manifold gasket go against the head or against the exhaust manifold. This is my first time changing this gasket as I'm also replacing with a used exhaust manifold as my original cracked. Thanks for any help.

Why a used manifold? just buy a new one. They are only $20

 

Well Both Sides of the manifold gasket are shiny. One side is completely smooth and the other side has rings around the four port holes. Which way does this go? Completely smooth side to the head or to the manifold? Thanks

 

anybody know for sure which way this goes or does it not make a difference?

 

it doesn't matter just TQ the bolts down afterwards.
