Default Honda Pilot low fuel light comes on, then won't start after another 10-15 miles

Had a sales rep at our office today with a Honda Pilot, don't know the year, 06-08 I think, with the projector headlights and sidemarker indicators on the fenders.

The car would not start when she tried to leave our office. For awhile it wouldn't even crank, not even a click from the starter. I tried to jump start the car, nothing. Power windows were still working. She said the low fuel light came on just 10 miles before the exit, so only about 12-15 miles before she got to our office.

A little while later the car would crank, but wouldn't start. A bit after that, roadside assistance came with some gas, put it in, car cranked right up.

WTF? Why would the car not crank at all, then crank but not start, and then start after adding fuel? I've never seen a low fuel light come on with less than 1 gallon left in the tank. But even if it was out of gas, why would it not have cranked?

It had been pouring rain right before we looked at it, so not sure if the moisture was messing with any electrical systems. Still it just all seemed weird and wasn't adding up.

ummm, it sounds like she ran out of gas dude.

it was probably out of gas when she went to leave, then she tried starting it until the battery died. then she came in and got you, you came out to a dead battery. you tried jumping her, which gave the battery some juice. then the roadside guy put gas in it, which it was missing, and it started just fine.

i have a pilot and i've never seen the gas light come on because i think it's dumb to wait that long to put gas in your car. therefore, i don't know what the range is once the light comes on, but it might be low, they get terrible gas mileage.

plus, woman can't be trusted with mileage estimates, especially when it comes to "when did the fuel light come on?"
