EM1 SIR troubleshooting questions
Whats up Honda tech first post on this forum not sure if the thread is in the right area. Just bought my first car a 2000 honda civic sir (rebuild). Have a couple questions about some of the problems i am having with the car as i was not made aware of them by the seller. The check engine light comes on within 2-5 min of driving the vehicle. Sometimes it's on when i start it, other times it takes a bit of time for it to come on. I am not aware of any problems with the engine as well as the scanner at the shop i took the car to couldn't connect with the computer. Any idea on how i can diagnose this? Or will the light be permanent due to the engine swap? Also the ABS light is on but the abs does appear to work. Plus it appears to be a wiring mess in the car, would wire tucking be a good idea to look into for the vehicle? Here is a list of specs on the car.

it's an OBD1 computer, that's why you can't read the codes with the scanner they are trying to use. check out the thread on retrieving OBD1 codes and report back.
wiring mess... yes, if it's already a mess, you can potentially make it better with a tuck. it's involved enough that you may discover loose wires, missing grounds, etc... that might be related to the engine light (unlikely but depends on the engine codes you find). you have to wonder why the wiring is a mess... it all could have been done with the stock harness and an OBD2b to OBD1 jumper. there are sometimes full OBD2b uncut VTEC harnesses out there (should be the same as any other VTEC EX/Si civic 99-00).

oh yeah, and entirely the wrong forum too, but i thought i'd try to help before people start trippin on you. you wanna be in the 92-00 civic forum, not the insight/crz forum. hell i don't even know why I'm here
Get started with this article:

Tells you how to pull the code from an OBD1 ecu. It'll get you to begin looking in the right places.
As for your wiring problems, you MAY want to look for an uncut EM1 harness (if the problems are with the engine wiring harness). Then, you can start from a solid foundation.
