AC clutch field coil problems
Can someone please help. I bought a 08 civic new it has 118,000 and last year the AC quit working. I have both service manuals and was able to diag a field coil. I got one from honda and put it in. Earlier this week when it was 108 the AC quit working again. I went through the same procedures and found the field coil was open with no resistance. I checked the thermal fuse, clutch clearance, replaced the relay as a precaution and put yet another field coil in. It lasted a half and hour. There is 12 volts getting to the coil and it wont engage the clutch. It is also open. apparently something is killing these $108 and 3 hour install parts. can somebody please help.
Hello tashascivic,
1.Is the field coil brand new? it is very unlikely if it is a brand new one.
2.Is there any burning mark around the field coil ? If yes,you have to replace a compressor.
hope this help

yes, it is a new one from honda. I have not pulled it out yet but the other ones had no apparent wear or burns. Can you explain why a compressor can take out a field coil? It would make me feel better about doing it if I understand the reason. Thank You
Hello tashascivic,
You should check ohm on the field coil, abput 3-4 Ohms.If no,that mean it 's dead.
Before buying a new set of clutch (Hub,Field & Pulley).you have to remove a clutch set to check the run-out on the nosecone. If it worn out too much,a new clutch set will not do any good.If the pulley bearing fit tight on the nosecone. Then you can go to the next step.
you need an auto a/c service tools:1.pulley remover set.2.Extrenal retaining Ring Plier.3.Air Impact Wrench to remove a small bolt on the Hub ,if you do not have one.You must buy or borrow a Chain Type Oil filter Removal tool to the hub from the compressor. You would have some idea by look at the attached Exploded View.
Hope this help.
have a good day.
