Custom UEL Header for B16
After a few weeks of reading up on the topic of un-equal length headers I knew I wanted one for my B16. I wanted that sound.
sound. I couldnt find any for sale, or even a picture of one! So, im going to make one myself!
About a week ago I got a used 90-91 integra Ebay header from a friend for $15. I bought it mainly for the flanges, and also the down pipe as i plan on keeping that part stock. This is going on my OBD-0 JDM B16A.
The jist of the modifications is this:
Pair cylinders 1/3 and 2/4 (instead of 1/4 and 2/3)
Lengthen one of the pairs by ~30% (thanks RevWorks for the info!)
Seems simple enough!
I've gotten the donor header pretty cut up now, and a good design in my head. Pics up soon!

Pics of what I have so far:
What im starting with

The engine bay it's going in (finishing up a headgasket job)

The room I have to work with (no A/C or PS)

First few cuts

Ready to mock up some pipes!

This is pretty much how I am going to join the #1&3 cylinders. Mocked up with a piece of hastily cut pvc.

Only worked on it for an hour or so and I've already got what I think is a solid start. The next step is to mock up cylinder 4. I want it to keep about the same angle as before, but go in front of the other pipes, instead of behind.

I cant comment on the %age of how much longer they need to be but 30% sounds like a good start, obviously as you know, the goal is to get 2 seperate cylinder pulses entering the collector at exactly the same time - together, rather than the normal inline 4 typically even spaced pulses.
What are you making 30% longer? A:The part where an individual cylinder merges with its partner?
Or B: the part of one pair where each pair merge with the other pair (at the collector)?
There was no sound difference on my skunk2 megapower where the opposite cylinders are merged to a "normal" header, however it was just about equal length so its hard to say.

If you really wanted to do this better, then you would want to start with some FEA and see what happens within the tubes with the bends. Albeit that just getting the lengths to match is close and better than the original design, any and all bends should be taken into consideration as they will change velocity.
After you get the lengths and bends correct, it would be worth the investment to have someplace do custom mandrel bends for each pipe so their interior surfaces would be free from any weld debris.

Funny that this thread came back from the dead... so did the header lol.
Finally did some work on it a few weeks ago. Dont have time to go into full detail right now, but im sure you guys can see whats going by the pictures.

Yeah, but its all just tacked together. Funny thing is, it only took about an hour to get it to this point! Haha hopefully we can get it finished the next day we get to work on it
You've basically created a Subaru with VTEC from the sound haha
I wonder how much of a loss in power this makes. If its like 3 or 4 hp, it's totally worth it for the sound.

This video is what got me inspired to start working on it again. It just sounds so mean. Im not really worried about the 5-10hp I might possibly be losing. Im sure it will still make more power than stock B series headers (except JDM ITR).
Not sure If I will get to do a back to back dyno with them, but if I do, I will for sure post it!
Oh, and the B16 is long gone. Now im preparing a B20V. Hope to have it swapped in my EF in about a month. Shooting for ~170whp
uhh yeah! That's sooooo sick sounding! wow i may do this to my itr and end it with a hytech twin loop lol I bet speedfactory makes fun of me for asking for this lol

If i ever do this i will also post build and dyno specs!

It's too bad that the collectors at the primaries are all contained in that one flange.
The mod you are doing essentially make two exhaust pulses rather than 4.
I'm thinking that if they were separate, then you could make one pair of primaries longer.
Then the secondaries would merge to get all 4 cylinders exhaust all at the same time.
One big exhaust pulse!
Might sound weird like a Harley or something

if ground clearance isn't an issue just make a 4-1 header. i've seen/heard several 4-1 headers give b series engines a nice subie growl just from how they were built. food for thought
Finished the header last night! Will upload pics when I get a chance. It came out looking MUCH better than expected. Cant wait to test it out!
Funny thing is that, even on Subarus, I prefer EL headers over UEL ones.
I certainly wouldn't put an UEL on my Honda just for sound.
However, that header looks pretty cool, and I'm curious to see how it sounds.
