Loud Air Release Hiss when I accelerate Honda 2000 CRV
Hello Everyone~
So when I accelerate between 25 - 50 mph range, I hear a loud air release.
It's sounds like excess air hiss escaping from directly underneath somewhere. Not under the hood. sounds like a SSSSSSSSSSSSssssssss ...lol
I don't think my car is hurting from this, but the noise is annoying, even with the windows up I can hear it and it only happens when I accelerate.
btw, it doesn't matter if AC is on/off. it just happens when I accelerate. Some days it happens alot other times its sparingly.
What should I tell my mechanic to look for?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Check everything on the intake side. Usually a hiss is air leaking while being forced into the engine. Make sure there are no rusted / broken bolts on your intake manifold, all the intake box pieces are intact, etc.
I did just get a new catalytic converter on it. About 6 months ago.
I don't know if this has anything to do with the exhaust.
I got a new AC Compressor installed purchased from autozone.
is it safe to say i might have a hole somewhere in that pipe that goes to the muffler?
Sorry I'm a newbie at car lingo.

where the flanges goes connected in the exhaust system. they tend to rust there and the muffler hanger as well. just check the entire system for any black spots. if their is it means might be a small hole their.i have a welder so i throw some weld on there.
Hi Guys,
So it turns out my oil pan was cracked. Got that replaced and the funky air sound went away.
anyways, hope that helps anyone else out there.

Hiya, Sounds to me like the wastegate on the turbo. Get it checked for correct setting.
Can you begin to think how a +cracked+ oil pan would be able to emit the sound of rushing air only when accelerating across a narrow speed band - and no one noticed an oil leak? Is this the sound of air rushing +into+ the engine, drawn by the partial vacuum in the crankcase (thanks to PCV system)?
@hondaviz
How much were you charged for the oil pan replacement, and who supplied the new oil pan? Just kind of curious..
Yea, I was thinking along the same lines - it does sound somewhat improbable.
Maybe they tightened some clamps and hoses, then fixed the leak (unrelated), and the leak ended up being the "hiss fix."

I'm wondering if it was a cracked exhaust gasket "near" the oil pan and it was heard differently by the OP. I'm curious what the cost of the repair was, that would give some insight
Hi Kiseliok,
Thanks again for your sarcastic dribble - Like some folks on here I would never have guessed that a cracked oil pan (sump) would have made the noise indecated and with over 50 years experience working with gas / diesel engines, plus speaking with my work colleagues to gain there thoughts on this matter, I doubt I even believe it.
Have a nice day
Kev
Hi Guys,
I have no idea how the sound got fixed after a cracked oil pan, but it did. No more annoying steam release air sound. During that time I did smell burnt oil.
At first my mechanic thought it was the heat pan loose, he checked it and everything was screwed on tight. He also checked the manifold, pipes, everything. no luck.
Anyways, I got my oil pan replaced for $180 in Las Vegas.
Now the honda sounds back to new.
Even though I have 135K. its still a great car!

I'm not sure where he got the oil pan from. I ll get back to you on that one.

At that price I wouldn't complain no matter what it actually was. Unless he got a crackhead price from a junk yard, you can't buy a pan and pay labor to swap it for $180. Either way, I doubt you could fix anything that could cause that problem for less than $180, so you got your money's worth even if it wasn't the pan.
