95 Honda Odyssey Timing Belt Issue Please Assist.
Hi whats up.
I am here because I need some information about whats going on with this job.
I am currently working on a 95 honda odyssey has its stock motor. Its my father in/laws. Basically he was driving and it lost teeth in the belt but the belt wasnt broken. he said he heard some knocking then the car died out. I am gueesing that is because the teeth missing on the belt which was a few teeth 8-9 knocked the timing off. he said he did try to start it again. so thats his story now to mine..
popped the hood took the valve cover off and noticed something when i took the top timing cover off it was kinda slanted. so i proceeded to take the belt off so i have. then i saw the teeth missing on the belt. then i unscrewed the cam shaft took it off and there was a key there. this key was grinded down and the cam could freely spin around without moving the valves so i was like hmmmmm.... went to honda got a new key for that put it all back on and now it all spins again like its suppose to.so i chanced it and remarked everything for the timing and tried to fire it. got nothing. re tried the timing 20 - 30 times thinkin meh im off or something. So after reading a little i should go ahead and take the head off right see if its something in the head? when i tried to start it up i didnt hear any grinding or banging like he said happened. i been busting my *** on this for 2 days just need a little bit of information cause my hands hurt.
i wanna do it right and fix it for him cause its my father inlaw so im doing all the work my self i did the timing in my 92 honda civic si and no issues. but then again i wasnt driving his car when it happened so i wouldnt have done what he may have tried to do.
thanks for takin the time to read this hope i said a good amount of information for some information.

Google "Interference Engine" It mean that if the belt breaks/slips, the valves will hit the cylinders.

You said it sheared the key? Sounds like Mr. Valve did meet Mr. Piston.
How many miles were on that Odyssey? Had the timing belt ever been changed before?

Thank you for the reply.
I took it apart today, head is off and miles 230k said a friend told him its time to change it and he waited too long. before him im not sure but i dont think he has ever changed it.
Now here is the update the valves are bent on 2 of them for sure.out of all of them 12 of the 16 valves are messed up. the pistons they have the imprints of the valves on them. it looks like happy and sad faces on them best way to describe it. now my next question is since it has that damage on the pistons do they need to be replaced too? was gonna take the head apart and take it to a machine shop and let them put the new valves in get it all cleaned up and try to do the pistons or is the motor done? the pistons are in tdc position. i set up the head and block for the timing b4 i took it apart.
so thats piston 1 and 4 are up and pistons 2 and 3 are down.
if photos will help ill take some tomarrow and post.

I'm far from an expert on this, but I would be leery of the camshaft being bent. (It's good that that key sheared, probably prevented more extensive damages)
Find a shop that can put the cam on a precision surface plate and measure the run-out on all the lobes. I know this method is described in the manual for my Pilot. If you can, get the Helm's-Honda manual.
As far as the pistons are concerned - dunno. Maybe someone with more experience will chime in.

after doing a little bit of research those imprints on the pistons are suppose to be there. phew what a relief. so just the head i need to worry about. i'll will look around and get them to do the precision surface plate thanks for that tip and take the head to the machine shop to get cleaned and new valves in.
