Rough start
1998 Civic EX coupe with MT:
For the past two months my car jolts on initial startup. It starts and runs fine, but has a kick (for lack of a better term) to it at initial startup. Possible motor mount issue? If so which one?

There's a good chance its a motor mount if it hasn't been changed for a long time, yes. If you can move the engine by grabbing the valve cover (and pulling it towards front of car) it shouldn't move more than 1/8-1/4". Sometimes you can get a good pry point to pry test it. If it easily moves when you push/pull on it then its usually the rear mount. You can visually inspect the inner rubber part of mounts for cracks/tears.
Other question- has it popped out of any gears recently? Is there more movement (while using shifter) in 1,3,5 compared to 2,4,R? If so, rear mountis definitely bad.

My son is using it now and won't be back for a while. I'll test it per your suggestion as well brake and light throttle in 1st gear to see if the engine lifts when he returns. Not popping out of gear at all.
