Why am I burning so much oil...?
Im looking for a little help to figure out what is causing my horrible oil burning problem.
My bottom end was just rebuilt with JE 12.5:1 slugs, eagle rods, new bearings etc etc. Cylinders were honed and overbored .020. Work was done by a reputable shop.
New oil pump, new gaskets, no oil leaks.
Engine: 95 JDM GSR
Symptoms: Car puffs smoke at startup, stops smoking and smelling like oil at operating temp at idle. If i get on it at all, it smokes. It HATES highway speeds. Billows smoke out if i mash the pedal in 5th gear. Burning about 1 quart every 150 miles. Car is running very rich, so some\most of the smoke is due to the richness, but im still burning oil.
Any insight or possibilities would be great.
Thanks,
-Nick-

did you break in the motor?....you are suppose to have a 2000mile(at least 1000) break in period so the rings can set....during the break in period the motor burns oil

I did break it in. 3000rpm for the first 200 miles, then increasing by 1000 rpm every 200 miles thereafter. When i first started the engine, i let it idle until operating temp, then for 15 minutes thereafter as perscribed in my Helms manual.
My main suspect right now are the valve stem seals. The engine was a piece when i got it, and i did not replace them during the rebuild. The head is coming off this weekend for some major work. Im hoping that it cures some, if not all of the problem.
On the topic of the breakin, ive also heard that the rings are set within the first 20 miles. People rebuild engines, strap them to the dyno, and by the second pull the rings are set properly.

Dude like - i have that same problem.. for like the first 1000 miles everything was all good, then after that, a quart a week!!
dude, this isnt cool!! i guess my friend will check it out when he gets back from Arizona, to put in my oil+water pump, but whats that "oil oriface" thing, where located, what does it do???

Hey Nick .... are we gonna have to tow your car to the meet SAT, or you want me to bring extra oil w/me ???
I do something similar in my new B20/VTEC. I have been told valve stem seals, but those were supposed to be new when I got my head back from alaniz. Im going to try replacing those first since that is the easy thing, and I dont have to pull the head.

Naw, I didnt PM ya, but i cant do a leakdown test til i get my head back. I dont think it's the block...
I pulled the dipstick out while the car was idling. I felt even puffs of air, but no exhaust smell, just oil. Dont know if that is a blowby indicator or not....
Thanks for all the help fellas,
