speedometer jumping during high idle??
hello everyone , i have a 96 Ek Hatch with a ex cluster..when i bought the car the MPH would stay at 0 and the car usually idles either at 1200 , 1500 or rarely at 2000 its a b16 and Vtec would work properly so i figured it wasn't the speed sensor , well the past few days idle stays high around 1500 - 2000 and MPH jumps around and today the speedo starts to actually work and it stays at 2000 unless i'm at a light for a little while then it goes back down ..(its been raining if that helps )
The actual idle does it , just drove back from work and realized if I'm driving and go into neutral and coast to a stop itl stay at 2200-2000 and once I'm at a complete stop it will drop to normal 1200 ( still a little high I know )
its a chipped p28 with a jumper harness , i'm starting to believe its my speed sensor because the idle was at 2000 as the mph jumped around and all of the sudden the speedo died and idle was back to normal again ,so i might just go out and buy a new sensor and try that out.
i'll be taking a look at that and hopefully using a friends speed sensor to test it out before going out and buying a new one , il keep updated on what happens though . appreciate the help

Those sensors are kinda high really, so I do suggest if it is suspected to swap for a known good first, but also the actual connector on top of the sensor is a common failure on civics 92-00. When you unplug it, check out the connectors inside and see if they're corroded. If you can get your hands on an OBD2 scan tool to see if you get a speed reading, that will help tell you if it is the sensor, the ECU, or the cluster. Since it's a combined issue, I'd try to sort out one at a time until you run into a common factor.
As far as the idle, check the vacuum lines, and if it is an erratic idle, do a little googling for the 10 page list of things that can cause that. lol. If everything else sorts out just fine, make sure the idle adjustment screw that you should never have to touch.....hasn't been touched. I'd save that for last though.

Well I fixed my main issue , I ended up getting the ecu a new b16 basemap idle is at a steady 800 so thankfully no more high idle , still Havnt messed with the sensor yet il get to it though , thanks for the help guys
