10w30 motor oil sub for MTF mileage?
I've got a 2000 Civic Si that I'm going to drive ~120 mi where it's going to be stored for a while, and likely pull the drivetrain out. So, I'd LIKE to avoid using Honda MTF, considering the trans is going to be drained b/c the axles, etc are going to come out after a low mileage.
I know Honda recommends 10w30 and a lot of ppl have stated that they've used 10w40. Granted, this is not a long term solution. What would be your opinion on safety of doing this for the transmission? What kind of mileage this would be safe for?

10w30 will be just fine. Don't overthink things.
Honestly, I think I might just prefer it to the current MTF formula. I feel like the new stuff looks like it has the viscosity of brake fluid.

Using a good 10w30 will not pose any problems
I have used regular 10w30 for a couple of heavy track days and did not notice one single difference in performance or wear.

Supertech (Wal Mart brand made by Mobil 1) non synthetic 10w-30. If you want to spring the extra dollar go with the high mileage version. I would continue to use it instead of the Honda MTF.
That stuff is pretty readily available.
