Default Motor oil VS Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF)

I want to know if my car has motor oil or MTF like it should.

I took a little out and it looks like motor oil but don't they look very similar. Are there any ways to ID which is which?

Also what is a good MTF for a 2000 Civic?!

I am thinking Amsoil Synthetic (mostly cause I cannot easily but Honda MTF but isn't the Amsoil better anyway? (being synthetic)

Thanks!

Smell it, MTF smells like gear oil. Use Honda MTF.

you'll know tranny fluid if you smell it smell horrid P/S fluid is right up there on smell also. tranny fluid would(should) be more clear then regular 5w30 when you drain it nut the smell should give it away

It's hard to ID.
Usually MTF is a clear amber color but if it's dirty you'll have a hard time telling.
If you're concerned about it, why not just drain the MTF and refill with something you KNOW is Honda MTF.

seeing this thread reminds me i need to drain the 10w30 valvoline out of my m2a4 trans and refill with oem honda mtf.

It seems as if motor oil makes it a weee little bit notchy when it gets cold outside (cold gearbox in the morning)

I know you can run reg oil in your trans, but I dont really like that. I've always used Pennzoil syncromesh and have always felt a difference with the way the trans felt after draining whatever was previously in there.

Only time i ever use synchromesh is in the 06-13 civic si K20/k24 6 speed transmissions to reduce the 3rd gear problem (pop outs/slight grind)

Actually my friggin m2b4 LSD h22 trans in my h swapped accord needs honda mtf also lol.. and who knows what fluid is in my 96 hatchback

and now come to think of it my 00 crv awd needs honda oem auto fluid! LOL...

all my cars need new trans fluid!!

Same here...now im broke hahaha

Bad last couple months. Wife and I had license renewals, both needed tags, all cars needed tires, tune-ups, oil and trans fluid changes. Well not broke, but savings sure the hell went down. Good for a while though lol

man same here i am doing terrible on money right now. This b20b4 w/ LS trans build in this 96 dx hatch is killing me..

back on topic: The very first prelude i ever purchased (the car that started the whole h22 thing with me) came with 85-140 in the trans and i didn't know any better and i tell you what that thing was hard to shift.

same here i have never paid for anything to be done to any of my cars because we have a full service shop with lifts and everything you could ever imagine except a damn exhaust pipe bender/expander machine...lol

BTW, honda MTF (all fluids pretty much) are way over priced ... guess they gotta gouge us one way or another.

I've never used it, I used some third party Synchromesh stuff from Autozone and never had issues
