HELP!!!!! Low oil pressure
Well, just fired up my beast today and my Greddy gauge is registering oil pressure of about 7psi!!!!! My set up is GE block, ACL bearings, JE pistons, JE rings, Eagle rods, Max rev mani, JG Edelbrock intake mani, T3/60-1 turbo, Hondata 4b.
I primed the car before I started it and could not get the dummy light to go off on the dash. However, I got oil to feed through the turbo feed line before I started it. The car started right up, no problem.
This may be a reason, I relocated my oil pressure sender unit to the port by the v-tec solenoid........I thought that was ok for the pressure sender, just not the turbo feed line. We loosened the oil sender unit while the car was running and oil trickled out, didn't spray or surge out like we had hoped, so I don't think it is the gauge malfuntioning. Even when the car was idling, the dummy light on the dash never went out.
The other variable is that I have relocated my filter and used -8 lines to do so. The filter that I now use is a huge one that is actually for a Ford Explorer...though the hole for the return on it is similiar to the OEM one, if that matters.
Let's see, I have a brand new Type R oil pump and I put a Prodrive gear in it ........I can't think of what else may be causing this low pressure. Maybe one of the things I have listed. I even took the car up to about 2500 rpm and no change in pressure.
My friend suggested I first take off my spin on oil filter adapter and put the stock one on to see if the pressure goes to normal. This sucks.........I gotta figure this out. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

The hole you have your sending unit in only reads the oil pressure that vtec uses and will not show anything until the vtec solenoid opens. Move the sending unit back to where it should be and you should be fine.
No that's cool man. Yeah, I put 5 quarts in, then filled the filter. The dipstick registered full. I may go check it again after it's settled. What should my psi be at idle?????
Yeah, I thought that may not be a good place for it, but I thought someone used that for sender unit.........oh well............I may hook it up to the t at the back of the block and see what happens before I do the stock filter thing. Wonder my my Greddy gauge is reading low??.......it is at the t at the back of the block.

Thanks, yep I did the line off the block to a T on the firewall........squirters weren't plugged, pick is fine. What is good idle oil pressure supposed to be....I gotta grab my manual.
Well, I just checked with my service manual and they say at idle, oil pressure should be 10psi minimum. Gonna move my sender to the back and see what happens.
Ok, here is something I just noticed. When I turn my ignition on, the Greddy oil gauge goes to 1/2 bar before I start the car....then when I do start it, the gauge goes to 1/2 bar and stays there....sounds like the gauge may be goofed........gonna pick up a pressure gauge and attach to my 2ndary input/output of my relocated filter, plus put my "dummy" sender unit to the back of the T of the block and see if it reads pressure.......ahhhh turbo!!!!!!!!
Yes, I did that....thanks! Gonna hook up a mechanical gauge to an extra port on the oil filter mount and see what that reads.....plus move the dummy sender unit to the back. updates to follow.
Jonathan, I think if you really only had 7 lbs of pressure, the motor would be very noisey. Got to be in your oil pressure unit or where it is installed.
yep, that's a god point Earl..............Here's some good news, I just hooked up a standard pressure gauge from the hardware store and a rubber fuel line to a nipple on the extra port on the oil filter mount and started the car................it read 70psi!!! Before I attached it to the oil filter port, I took my air compressor and shot 60psi of air into the gauge to test it and the gauge read 50psi, so, I don't know how accurate it is and it may be a little off, but it is showing pressure.........more than 7psi.....I am going to look at the Greddy gauge wiring and check it all out and then relocate the sender unit and see what happens. I'll keep in touch.
Well, I think my oil pressure is ok, however, now my Hondata will not recognize the ROM's I burn. It is running in limp mode. I have triple checked everything when I burn the ROM, put the chip in the ECU right, but the car still runs hella rich......after I figured out my oil pressure problem, I started the car and let it idle and it was reading 10.1 on the FJO A/F readout, then it started to bog and I could tell it was flooding out. My plugs are soaked. The Hondata LED on the box flashes, meaning the chip is backwards or the ROM is not recognized........I have e-mailed Crescent at C-Speedracing (where I bought it and who modified my ECU) and hopefully he can help.....sounds like the Hondata or my ECU is screwed up. ARGGHH!!!!
When my car is cold, the oil pressure will hit 80 PSI when I start it. Once it warms up, it'll be between 15 and 30 PSI for idle, between 37 and 50 for cruising around, and will top out at 70-ish when driving hard.
