So I picked up this CVCC locally and i'm trying to get it to run right. I've replaced the fuel pump with a new unit, added a generic holley fuel pressure regulator set at 2.5 psi, installed an inline fuel filter and replaced the carb with a new holley rebuilt unit. I've tried taking the carb apart and cleaning and it'll run ok for a little while(because it's cold?) until it gets warm it wants to drown itself out at idle. I'll even drive on a local road and it'll get so bad that it'll just bod down and not clear itself by revving. I'll be cruising in 3rd and eventually just bog itself down completely. I can see it's getting past the primary needle at idle. This is the second carb that's done this. Whats the deal??

 

Make sure the solenoids are working properly. (Assuming this is the same type of carb I had in a '78.) I used to keep a small plastic bottle with a long nozzle- type lid on it to suction the carb beneath the venturi- gas would puddle up in it because one of the solenoids kept sticking.

 

the fuel shut off solonoids only shut off fuel when the car is off, I'm not even sure they used them that far back, is the float level set correctly on both the main and aux floats? remember it's a two barrel carb with a small independent carb attached to the side. there are two completely separate floats, needle valves, and fuel inlets

 

Looks like it does have the fuel shut off solenoids. It passes through a solenoid from the bowl and then moves up into the needle... Not sure how to test if they're working.

 

they only shut off fuel when the engine is off, they are always open with the key on

 

Ok, well I have a regulator on there set to keep it from overriding itself so the issue with the carb DUMPING fuel seems to be fixed via the regulator. It's at like .5 PSI according to the Holley Gauge. It runs like it did when I first got it running again. Still has a hiccup though.

Anyway, i'm still fighting that 3000-4000 rpm hiccup, it's so bad the car doesn't want to accelerate. I actually have to downshift and damn near redline it until I can go above 4000 rpm in the next gear. That or go down hill lol. It doesn't have enough torque to drive up ANY hill in 5th gear unless i'm going like 80+...
